td42 camshaft

Post by Tomo_89 »

Hey guys
Just wondering if anyone has had any cam work done to an N/A td42? I plan on turboing it in a few years time but would like to get all the body/suspension work finished first. just looking for a bit more power in the mean time.. I already have extractors and a 2.5 inch system and have turned the fuel up a bit. does anyone know of any other mods worth doing?
any info would be appreciated

save your money and time, Turbo is the only answer.

If you want to put some more fuel in you can run a TB42 cam. You have a little more lift and duration. Having said that, I second bogged's call. No use putting more fuel in if you don't have a puffer. ;)

I works pretty well. It will give you more lift and more duration (ie it will give you more fuel and air). If you want to grind a custom cam then use a TB42 cam as a starting point because it has more metal on it to use.

Is there much point in a cam shaft upgrade when still using a non modified pump. (stock pump with aneroid)

I wouldn't pull the head off, as required to get the lifters out, for a TB42 camshaft, the difference in lift and duration is less than sweet nothing. I have a grind I've made up that maximizes lift without excessive duration as excessive duration leads to the loss of low down torque. I use it in both the TB42, TB45 and TD42. The TB42/45 have a different rocker ratio to the TD42 so you need to look at cam lift not valve lift for comparison, and I grind the TD42 on wider lobe centres for piston to valve clearance.

Yeah bump on this, i'd also like to know about rocker ratios. Was thinking about an increase in rocker ratio on the TD42 for bigger lift

not planning to strip it down again to pull cam, just interested in rocker arm ratio differences between TB42 and TD42 eh

i was asking for the specs of the factory cams.

i also wouldn't buy a cam from anyone who won't give out the basic specs like lift, duration, valve timing and lobe seperation angle.

IF i was that keen, i'd buy one and cam doctor it to find out anyway.

I have those at work, I'll try to remember to bring the specs home.

Ment to post this a while ago but got distracted, the Rocker Ratio for a TD42 is 1.5 as to the specs of the std cam ?? the factory manuals I have only list the TB42 specs.

The TD 42 cam is within 1.5 degrees of the TB42 and not worth. I have a GU TD42 with our high lift camshaft, Custom intake, exhaust, extractor turbo manifold, pump etc that makes 185 rwkW while maintaining EGT's similar to stock over a 12 second ramp on the dyno at 5 klms/h per second. Peak power is acheived at 3600 rpm and maintains it to 4700 rpm, more power is on hand if I turned the fuel up, but I'm happy.

In what gear and what diff ratio, with what tyre size and certainly not an Automatic (torque conveter multiplication). Rear wheel torque is pretty meaningless unless all these factors are the same as any vehicle you want to make a comparison to. My vehicle has 35's 4.6:1 diffs (previously a 2.8) and was in 4th gear. The point of peak torque dosen't change but the amount does. I'll try to remember to print out and scan the dyno run and post it up tomorrow so you can make your own assesments.

Cheers

Very true.
and there`s a lot of other variables that can be thrown into the mix as well.
Suppose I just have a thing about torque.

Hi PGS 4WD
What is one of your performance Turbo diesel cams worth and does it still give you good low down torque.
I am after a cam with less overlap therefor less loss of air out the exhaust when scavenging under boost.
Cheers Andrew.
