removing front diff centre

Post by Adsport »

hi all , i have a long history with cars but im new to 4x4's. im just after some info regarding the disassembly and removal of the front diff centre. a search of this board didnt bring up anything relevant.

is it as simple as just unbolting the locking hubs and anything in the way and pulling the axles out? do the axles consist of a shaft with a CV joint on it as i would imagine ? i have removed banjo diffs before but only on fixed axles in the rear of RWD cars, never a 4wd with swivel hubs. vehicle in question is an 89 sierra with standard driveline.

any illustrations and/or reference to relevant information is greatly appreciated .

thanks in advance

It's pretty straight forward.
1, Remove the wheels.
2, Remove the brake calipers.
3, Remove the locking hubs.
4, Remove the circlip on the outer end of each axle.
5, Remove the 50mm nuts.
6, Remove the hubs. Be careful not to drop outer bearings.
7, Undo 4 X 14mm bolts that hold backing plates on.
8, Remove CV's and axles.
