mq diff conversion

Post by troopy94 »

I have broken 2 cvs last weeknd and was wondering about putting mq diff under my widetrack zook to gain some strength and more stability. The plan is to keep it sprung under im just wondering if many people have done it and what is required or is it just a waste of time

Search. So many threads.

The front will almost bolt straight in I think. Just new drag lonk and drive shaft. Rear needs new spring pads.

ljxtreme and sierrajim have done it down in vic. Have a search for thier rigs.

Bible has thread on best diff conversion poll. Lots of MQ info in there.

Before going to nuts with a diff conversion consider chromo cv's and axles. If your not going bigger that 33/34 or insanly wide tyres these would be ok. Have look at www.lowrangeoffroad.com

thanks for the link i ordered 6.5 gears for the zook and it runs a front detroit locker so im guessing breaking cv,s is going to be an ongoing problem and i have access to 2 pairs of mq diffs

More info might be able to help people.

Work out why are they breaking? What tyre size are you running? That'll make a difference to the upgrade or swap decision.

how mechanically minded are you..
would you be capapable to carry out such a job as a diff conversion??
have you gone out to the shed and actually looked under your car and looked at the diffs your wanting to put in???

yes i got sick of breaking cvs after two as well, i went hilux. i think the MQs wil be lots easier.

id suggest get the diffs, slide em under and take some measurements. i think you will find its not that big of a job depending the answer to my first 2 Qs.

than if it all does go ahead, document it all down and post it up for everyone to see..

when chosing to stay with suzuki diffs i always look back at the below pic.. bigger is always better (not always)

im pretty mechanically minded ive got mq diffs under my other zook but that is with 3 link and coils on the front and aframe rear i alreardy have the larger master cylinder that bolts to the original booster so the brakes arent a problem i was curious how people went with the conversion and if thr results are worth the effort

Why not wheel this zook on the hard stuff and run around town in the stocker?

I don't see the point in having 2 big diffed zooks unless you have different purposes intended for them. Pick through the threads though. You will find the useful info you need. Front spacing is the same, rear perches need moving. Steering draglink required. Worth it if you're planning 35s or bigger.

i would but the way the things are over here in the west the big zook would be on the road for 10 minutes before i got a defect notice it doesnt matter even if you got a permit they still pull you over just to put the s@#s up you and im 30 so its been a while since ive had p plates.basically i just wanted a stronger drive train for more reliability and increased width for stability

suzuki cro mos will cost around $700 delivered?? approx??
how much is your time worth to do the conversion and buy the diffs???
thats the big question. ppl are getting away with running up to 34s with the cro mo fronts. bolt in with few changes.

me on the other hand spent the time in labour to do the conversion. if you do for what ever reason break an axle on the trail, how do you fix it to drive the next day? putting in MQ will give you bigger std stuff that you can buy from almost anywhere if you do break. just my thoughts for what they are worth

running 32's with MQ/MK diffs your diffs will almost be dragging along the ground.

Go chromos unless you plan to run 35 +

Most of the guys in Perth that need to are simply trailering them to and from the bush these days. Depending on where you go the Rangers can get a bit upset, still ( Brunswick ), but you have less problems with the cops

just borrowed the pic from rotazuk
first and third axles are the same just different pic sizes
if someone had a pic of a MQ axle to post up would be good, i have a GQ shaft in the garage, if the MQ is anything to go by, it is huge. much bigger than the hilux (last axle)

Years ago I think N*A*M or Mock posted a side by side Zook and Patrol pic.

Probably lost in the great outers crash of 05 or whenever it was.

Judging by those pics the stock luxes don't have much if anything on chromo zooks. Especially considering the stronger material.

I have a front mq diff, the rear is incomplete....

I have been umming and areing lately because of future tyres that i wanna run with the big boys

The cast front diffhousing i have seen welded as a spoa on a mk patrol(white one) ! Looked to be done with a mig.

I am yet to find out if i can mig it or braze the new pads on with the special cast metal rods...

Lots of talk in the Nissan section about welding perches to the front diff housing.

IMO if you want to go SPOA go LC60/hilux, patrol SPUA. But fair enough if you're already halfway there with the patrol parts
