need help pretty fast, gearbox whine
need help pretty fast, gearbox whine
hey people,
I've been in the market for a swb gq for a wile now and I think i found one finally thats in budget and in good nick. A few little rust patches in the normal spots. 340k kms. on the clock. but apart from that it is in good nick.
The only things i'm a little worried about was when i took it for a drive last night, the gearbox has a high pitch whine to it under acceleration.
I'm thinking that jsut a heavier oil would fix that up, but is there other more expensive problems with that sort of noise.
It only did it under load, in all gears. was still there in 4wd too just not as loud.
The car is for sale, thats the only reason i'm after an answer fast. I think that no matter what the prob is, I'll get it. The guy needs money fast, and coz of that, hes selling at a very low price. I think its jsut too good of an offer to walk past.
Thanks for any help in advance people.

rust <---- big arse problem
gearbox whine
340km's ( although km's are only relative to the condition of teh care in general)
it wont be worth that much anyway mate, so beware, especially if you have to pay to get the gearbox checked and repaird.

the rust i didnt see as an issue. one spot is in the rear quarter panel down the bottom of the wheel flare. Another spot is under the passeneger door (surface rust) and the drip guter on the back has a little surface rust on it.
I'm happy with that to be honest. I'll put some stuff on it to stop it getting worse. I might cut it out of the guard if i get energetic one day. But hey, its a going to be going bush. and i'm spending most of my money in the engine bay, so i dont really care what it looks like.
The engine runs so smooth. it has the tb42. but no preignition, to noise at all really. Exhaust manifold needs to be done. but thats it. It doesnt like to idol that much either, but I think just a good tune and a clean would fix that up.

2500. rego till feb.
AS far as i can tell mate, the tyre have got maybe 80% left on em. they are great. their deserst dwellers. so i'm thinking that alone is almost a grand.
As i said, its a nice looking car, drives so smooth, clutch and brakes are great. heaps of power, there was an lpg sticker on the back, I forgot to ask about that tho.
As i said, i'm going to get it. coz even if it does need a new box in her, its still worth the money.

if it had LPG, check the head and for overheating and/or chemiweld in the radiatior
seems like you have made up your mind already anyway

CHEMISWELD?
not to sure what that is sorry man, or even how to check for it. I'm guessing its a discoloration in the radiator fluid. from green to something else. is that right?
Pretty much mate, i am jsut after some ideas, I would prefer not to have to put a new box in, but since joining this site, i've found that there is a huge wealth of knowledge in here. so getting some of the bigger brains then mine to have a say on it, i can get an appreciation of what it is im buying.

chemiweld will make ths radiator water look pink-red and murky not clear like coolant. Its used to fix cracked heads for $6.00 instead of doing it properly. Only problem is you can drain it once it has sealed the crack and refill with normal coolant and no one will ever know.
My bitch has boost, Nutter Engineering Turbo GQ
so will it fix the a cracked head or is it jsut a temp job. I'm guessing its got to be a pretty small crack in it tho. or the oil would be F&^%ed and or the cylinders full of water and chemiweld?
Look as long as it can last a about 6 months, whilst i build the savings up to get the rb25det motor, i'll be happy.
Thanksf or allt he help guys.

somtimes permanent, sometimes temporary. Depends on where its cracked and how bad.nellyb1 wrote:so will it fix the a cracked head or is it jsut a temp job. I'm guessing its got to be a pretty small crack in it tho. or the oil would be F&^%ed and or the cylinders full of water and chemiweld?

be careful with cracked heads.
Mine did it as i was lucky that the water when into the oil and not into the Cylinder head
Have a Ferroza in the shop atm that crack the head and let coolant into the cylinder, FYI it has a bent no.4 conrod, so they can be a exp job if they aren't right

AA's for Quitters
well i rang him last night to find out a few little bits a peices about it.
The head was replaced two years back by the orginal owner.
The carby issue (not idoling properly) Should be fixed by a good clean up and a tune. but he is going to give me the spare carby he has.
One of the power window motors broke and he didnt know how to fix it, so he pulled them both off and replaced them with manual handles.
The diff lock is a swtich near the stereo. I'm not sure if that is orginal or after market, but the light next to it doesnt work. I'll have to have a look at it to find out why it doesnt work, but its a rear locker.
timing belt was replaced when the head was done. he had the receipt for the whole thing which was good to see.
Its going to be good to say that i've now got my first 4wd. Now to get rid of the little white mazda and get fixing and moding.

lol....
yeh i'm already thinking that. It would get rid of that little bit of rust at the bottom nicely. But then i would have to put bigger tyres on, you see it already has the 2" suspension lift.
I guess to then even it out a bit, it already has a bull bar, so i'd need a rear bar to match.
Nah first thing is to get it running smooth.
It had lpg in it. and someone took it out. so the fuel tank thats in it, is heaps small. i think its only 40-50lts. So a bigger one of them is needed.
and going to give it a full service this weekend. I'm talking, diffs gearbox, transfercase, fan belts, eng oil, filters, air cleaners plugs, may even go to leads. not sure yet.
then i'll start the mods.
Any you guys know a good wreckers around teh newcastle area that would have a few shortys. I'm going to be after a few bits
Door trim.
Power window units.
rear right sliding window.
Then the idea is to put an aftermarket alarm and central locking in it. tint the windows up and get the air con running.
Then i'll start saving up for the engine mods. TB42 out RB25DET in. BRING ON THE HORSES.

trust me man, I'll only be spending the bare minium on the engine. I just wanna make sure that its going to last me till i get the money for the swap.
I just dont know when the last time this joker may have done an oil change, or did a fan belt, or even thought about the gearbox.
Maybe i'm a control freak, but i just wanna know when its been done, and know that its been done right.
God that makes me sound like my grandfather.
"You want it done right boy, you do it my way!"
