vitara starter motor
vitara starter motor
rang supercheap and repco to try and get a starter motor for my 96 model vitara one said they dont have a listing the other said that the only one i can get is a uni point one.i have been through 3 of the unipoint ones in 18 months.(over it).does any one know if i can get a bosch one from somewhere?
its a 96 swb with EFI .removed the latest one to die last night, pulled it apart and cleaned it up( as the outo elect had done for me a few months ago and charged me $150),put it back and it worked fine, started first kick thismorning when i went to work at 6 but when i got in to start it at 5 this avo it wouldnt start till i hit it with a hammer.it does see a lot of water but i havent heard of any others that have the same trouble so i was woundering if it might just be those perticular ones but i cant seem to find any others.
if its like the sierra/swift ones the insides are the same and just the casing needs clocking aorund or swapping the innards over.
i have a baleno one here and going to swap them over to my vit engine when i get time.

I found the painting the inside of the solinoid with a good tough epoxy helped alot when your starter is dunked a but in the drink.
Cooldrive sell plenty of aftermarket starters, The one I got off them for my GU was quite good and proved to be quite reliable.

found this on ebayhttp://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0252323179
I sell them for $165 brand new + postage.
that ebay site is incorrect , the vitara one has a different bolthole pattern to the all the others listed on that site. all the front wheel drive cars have a different bolthole pattern to rear wheel drive (on a vitara/sierra the boltholes are in line with the centre of the nosecone , the front wheel drive cars the boltholes are offset to the centre of the nosecone)

A hard epoxy paint. You can get it for tools etc. Helps stop it from rusting and sticking when it gets water logged.sally_o wrote:i didnt touch the solinoid when i cleaned it the other night. . .should i heve cleaned it to????? when u say a hard apoxy something like araldite?????

I knew a guy who used to rebuild starter motors for a living. He told me to clean them up inside (including the solenoid/ throw out mechanism- that's what usually causes the issues) and that often it's best to put no grease on them. That's what causes the problems as crap accumulates in the grease and binds them up.
He said the only thing he'd lube them with is silicone spray.
