bullbar legal or not

Post by bornstar15 »

hey all just wondering im thinking of making up a custom bar which will consist of two 2inch steel pipes that will go across the front from chassis to chassis now i was just wondering if this is legal or not because there is no bar infront of your tires btw i am in NSW the bar will end at the end of the chassis cheers

as long as there are no sharp edges, no sharp forward protrusions and the ends have a nice radius on them you should be ok.

just ask the friggin RTA. Why do people think it is a good idea to ask people on the internet about legal matters?

cheers for ur views on it the reason ppl ask ppl over the net is becuase most ppl out there are decent ppl who are willing to share there views on the topic and alot of zook drivers on here have been through the process of legalities so they could kno the answer to your question i think someone forgot to take there happy pills this morning yeh :finger:

No offence to Joe, but that's why you ask the RTA rather than asking on the internet.

Joe should be right, but say you build it and drive down the road and get a canary- all you can say is I asked some guy on the internet and he said it should be OK.

In Victoria, Vicroads have a bulletin on an A4 sheets you can pick up from any office that explains exactly what's legal and what's not. There's stuff about permissable radii, profile etc.

Odds are the RTA in NSW have a similar thing.

Like Grimbo said, when it comes to legal matters, you really do need to ask the right people, not the opinion of anyone so you can choose the answer you want.

After all that, I am aware of cars being defected in Vic for inadequate tyre coverage from the front. in Vic.

asking people for legal answers is just asking for problems down the track. Asking them for tech related etc fine no problems but do you really want to take the risk with legalities especially these days?

A little off topic, but in nsw, most of the information you will require regarding legalities can be found here:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... i_dl1.html

and here

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... e_dl1.html

Hope this helps

This bar is custom and legal in WA:

My engineer says basically as long as if you hit a person laterally theyre deflected to the sides of the car, the tyre doesnt have to be covered at the front - it's their own bad luck if they go under the wheel... lol

im just building my custom bar now ill put up picks when i actually start welding. but im also planning on doing RUF at the same time.
so what i was thinking is doing a bolt on bullbar/chassis extension. does any body know exactly how long the chassis extension needs to be? or how far forward to move the hanger?
thanks

Depending on what springs you use, shackle length you want, and what angle you want, i think you can get away with 40mm or so.

cheers lay80n i thought it would depend on shackle length and things like that. yea i think a bit of 50mm bar will be sweet then ill just wled the hanger to suit.
