I second this. At least for the time being, it will keep things much simpler and quicker for you. Plug it in, hook up three or four wires, and you're done.

4.4 isnt much of a stroke dude, and yes they can be a total pain. Its the small things like cold start, and idle after deceleration that can cuase problems. The factory ecu is the best at controlling all the small things.

yeah i know 4.4 isn't much (couldn't afford forged pistions for the 5L - but kicking myself now)

aren't most computers tuned for cold start, hot start, etc haven't looked right into this yet...

more than just the dyno. You could get good power figures from a dyno, but ironing out the onroad habits can take months.

we were just going to temporary tune it on a weekend driving around with the laptop, no charge for this. cheaper then big bucks on the dyno, at this stage.

cold start

Post by Hally »

X2 on the aftermarket ecu I run a Haltech EX6 and the mechanic spent weeks of trying to get the cold start right and its still not :bad-words: some days it's a pig to start and other days it kicks first go and also what Grimace said poor idle after deceleration mine will be going back in for another dyno tune when I get back hopefully you wont have as much trouble as mine did Fingers crossed I'll be back in brizzy in two weeks sam so if you need part numbers let me know

A few of the D90 rovers are running 4.6s with the 4.2 RR computer, even better with a tuned chipset.

what would the differences between 3.9 computer and manifold and say the 4.6 computer and thor manifold? is it easy to remap the 3.9 & or run bigger injectors if needed? as i don't know if the stock 3.9 that would run to lean? - or run a piggy back system?

14CUX (3.9 ecu), with a thor manifold on your 4.4 will give good figures down low, and be great for not only offroad but onroad it will drive with ease, it's all the benefit of having 50% more power downlow where your engine spends most of its time.

The thor manifold generally reduces power at the top end, and will not flow as much HP as a standard 3.9 plenum.

I personally think the 14CUX will be fine, and to get a bit more out of it later down the track you could fit and tune a piggy back ecu.

There is a few modifications needed to run the thor manifold and it will be costly. I would budget an extra $1000 over the cost of a standard 3.9plenum installation. You will need a fuel rail out of a 92 rangie or later aswell.

I had a list of all the mods needed that I got from a fello rangie owner who has done the swap on his 3.9, if you do get serious on the thor I can confirm everything needed and forward the information to you.

Might also be able to do two at once, as I am still wanting to fit the thor to my 3.9 POS.

finally got the wombat back a wek or two ago, and really happy with the injection over the carbys!!

heaps more low down torque, smoother idle, easier start. runs pretty well for a little 4.3.

haven't had (yet) any issues with cold/hot start, or idle issues. hasn't been dyno'd yet - next year sometime.

my mechanic had heaps of issues getting the tune right, but after trying different computers, etc, etc, etc found that the dizzy was playing games and fitted a optic? dizzy, and bingo problem solved.

ended up using the 3.9 plenum and obviously megasquirt system mounted behind passenger seat.

now questions, from moving from a manual isuzu and barely using the brakes at all to a v8 auto i have found how crap the fender brakes are!! especially towing!! what are the possible options for brake upgrades? haven't checked type of pads, etc yet.

need to lift the rear a little as now the front sits higher. with the isuzu the bump stop heights were
(passenger front) 85mm (driver front) 90mm (rear pass) 110mm (rear driver) 110mm
now
110mm, 110mm, 115mm, 115mm

haven't really wheeled her yet (just camp mtn rd - cruiser park, still felt fairly stable - no lifting front wheels) to see how the weight difference off the nose and auto work, next wek or two will get out for a proper play at ormeau to suss her out, then in a few weeks rip out the xfer for some 49% gears

will get some pics up shortly.

hey defmac the ZF is stock - we'll see how long it stands up, although its not a daily driver.

mate had drums in the rear originally but i put a disco diff with discs on, i think the later defender (TD5's?) had bigger brakes then the earlier ones?

Yeah it does look good, Ben...but its just a poncey Macca's carpark wheeler. Actually...its more like a ricer on 33" tyres.

I was embarassed to have it parked in my driveway yesterday, even though it was for about 4 minutes.

And it absolutely bucketed down second after he left for the 2 minute drive to his place...but then his wife had to open the gates, and then he had to reverse 25 metres up his driveway to 'Church' to put the g-h-e-y little thing away.

He'd be lucky if it didn't shrink in the rain.
