5DB Car Antenna

Post by dklyne454 »

Hey guys,

I bought a 5db car antenna the other day that is supposed to boost the signal for the mobile phone. It was a cellnet AOG5DBD Twin Pack Car Antenna.

I got home and realised there were no instructions to setting this thing up, so i quickly did a google search and only found them for sale, couldn't find any info on them.

I then rang cellnet, and spoke to a very lovely lady who had no idea, but would find out for me and get back to me. When she rang yesterday, she said that she can't find any instructions, only a picture. She recommended i go to an auto elecy or the likes to have someone hook it together.

I dont actually want to use this on my car though, it is to go on the guttering outside my house office window to boost the strength for my mobile, and wireless internet and home phone, as they all run on the 3G mobile network.

Could any one help me with what is what?

It came with
-1 x long skinny arial about 40cm
-1 x Short fat arial about 15 cm
-1 x 3m sticky arial base Without port
-1 x magnetic arial base with port
-1 x little black box 2" x 1" with port
- 10 feet of arial cable with Connector on one end, nothing on the other.
- 2 x spare connectors.

Would have loaded a pic, but it is taking forever at the moment,(Hence why i bought the arial) but a quick search for the product number in google brings up about 50 results with pics.

It is the "Glass Mounted Twin Pack Car Antenna 5DB"

Any help would be apreciated.:?

Thanks Daniel.

ok, first things first. antenna gain does not 'boost the signal', it just changes the shape of the radiation. low gain results in a more spherical radiation pattern. the higher the gain, the more like a "frisbee" the radiation from your antenna. you could think of it like a balloon with a cup of water in it - low gain is just letting it sit as is, high gain is squashing the balloon flat between your hands. some of the balloon goes further, some of it becomes closer to the centre. if you know where your target is, and it is at the same elevation as you, then high gain can be helpful. it does not increase the strength of your signal and does NOTHING to improve reception, so if your downstream speed is slow, it will always be slow.

if you are using it on glass, you need A or B, C, E, F and G. the antenna base sticks the the outside of the glass. the base with the port sticks to the inside of the glass. the cable goes between the base with the port, to your device (modem, phone etc - you might need an in-car hands free kit to plug it in to something.) you will need a hex crimper to attach the connector to the other end of the cable. they are about $40 from Dick Smiths.

the magnetic base should be self explanatory.

to attach it to your guttering you will probably need to make a bracket of some kind. It's not the ideal antenna to use on a building.

hope that is of some help.
