1HD-FT and 5 speed/transfer case into 70 series?
New here, just found this forum. I did a search but came up empty.
Was wondering if anyone has put a 80 series 1Hd-FT with matching 5 speed and transfer case into a 70 series? I am trying to fit this into a LJ-78 but seems the transmission/transfer case are taller? than the H55F/split case? I replaced the engine mounts from a 70 series application HZ, both block and frame. The rear is too low even though it is all the way up hitting the tunnel.
Thanks.

you could try a R151F gearbox from a HZJ105 although the 1HD-FT is likely to shred it. the best bolt in option is the H55F from a HZJ75 with the split transfer, it will bolt straight to the 1HD-FT, although you will need a 12" clutch plate, there is an Isuzu part that fits, a little seach will turn up the part number. I have a couple but postage is likely to be prohibitive.
I am surprised the 1HD-FT fits in the LJ engine bay, I looked at doing the swap into an LJ70 but found the engine bay to be too short.
The entire frame of the LJ78 is different to a "true" heavy duty 7x series, so you may need to chop mounts off and weld back in more appropriate locations.
cheers
Brian

1hdft
i put a 1hdft into my 75x and went through 3 h55 box's before i put the h151 into it
i got a hdj79x gearbox crosmember, had the front tailshaft lenghtened and rear shortned
i got the gearbox tunnell cover from a petrol 75x and also the transfer case lever from the same vehicel
send me a pm if you need any more info
from my own experience any other box over the h151 you are only wasting your time and money

An LJ-78 is a four door version.
One option is a body lift, but I need to keep it as low as possible so it will fit in the garage, long cold winters here.
The frame of a LJ vs heavy duty isn't really all that different aside from coil springs/vs leaf springs and the front body mounts/radiator support are at different locations. That is why I moved this part off of my BJ-70 onto the LJ-78, and am using the front clip off of the 70.

That would probably be me.. although it was actually a PZJ70..dow50r wrote:One guy on here has a hdft in a bj70
There should still be some pics of my conversion in the members section if you do a search.
Yes the 7x landcruisers all have the same front end.. so essentially its the same conversion as tobie's. Likewise I agree with him regarding only using the h15x series gearbox, anything else may work for a while but the 1HD-FT will destroy it eventually. As for the R151, my 1PZ 5 cylinder destroyed that gearbox, as do many 1HZ's with the main weakness being 5th gear.
Out of interest tobie, did you have to relocate the transmission crossmember mounts rearwards to cater for the h151?
1hdft
intially had the 1hdft in with the h55,
when i swaped over the box to a h150, i bolted up the box to the motor then had another set of gearbox mounts which i welded to the chassis, i let the original mounts for the h55, still going to cut them off just waiting for a rainy day, the crossmember mount was from a hdj79x and it all went straight in

thats similair to what I had to do, although i cut off my original crossmember mounts and re-welded them further back on the chassis.
I used what I think was a hdj7x crossmember but i still had to modify it as my swb chassis was a bit too wide for the original crossmember bolt pattern where the mounts had to be re-welded, not sure if thats the same for the 75 series. Although, if I recall, you had to chop and mod a tubular crossbar on your chassis that i didnt have to on my swb.
I'm still to find an FZJ75 gearbox cover so i took a 4" grinder to a piece of 1.6mm stainless and rolled it around a bit of tube, it came up pretty well although is sealed with sika rather than a rubber seal.
cheers..

g'day dan
i thought i would have to modify the tubular section behind the box
luckly i saw a fzj75x and stuck my head under it and seeen that there was only about 20mm clearance
when i put the box in i had to put it in on an angle and then slide it in, was very tight
i had no mods at all besides the crossmember mounts and the fllor plate cove

Sorry Dude, yep that is you...hows that wheeel standing 70 going
Confucious say...man who argue with idiot, worserer himself
Can you guys clarify what transfer cross member you guys used? You guys keep mentioning HDJ7x, but as far as I know the HD was never put into a 7x, so do you mean out of a HZJ7x? If I keep the tranny like I am thinking I will now that you guys have recomended this, the tranny mount is short compared to when used on a H55F.
Did you guys use all of the emissions crap or where you able to get rid of some of the hoses?
How did you get the speedo to work? I got a speedo from a BJ-70 and a LJ-78. Do you know of a cable drive unit that I can replace the electric one for? What about the tach?
Anything else I need to know about doing the wiring?
Thanks.

there is no emissions 'crap' on a 1HD-FT. none.coldtaco wrote: Did you guys use all of the emissions crap or where you able to get rid of some of the hoses?

the electronic speedo drive is just screwed on the back of a mechanical drive unit, so a cable should attach to the drive you already have.
the tach should run off the same sensor in the pump as the LJ. you just have to find the right wire.
there is nothing to wire on a 1HD-FT to get it to run except the starter and the fuel shutoff solenoid on the pump. You might want to attach the glow screen if you have trouble starting it at low temperatures, the lowest mine has ever been is only around -5C, at which it started first hit, no glow.

I'm refering to all the vacuum lines that I thought had something to do with emissions. Might need help figuring out where they all go.
Definitely will have to "winterize" it.
Was the power difference/driveability quite noticeable? The 13B-T had/has good power for as little power it has, it's amazing what a turbo can do.
Thanks.

power difference compared to what? my HD-FT is in an 80 series. it's adequate.
there are vac/manifold pressure hoses for the boost compensator (manifold to fuel pump), and some for the air con idle up, some for the dashboard boost light(s). that should be able all.

Im guessing your 1HD-FT came from Japan? If so the extra vacuum lines your refering to are for the two emission control valves (EGR) in the turbo/intake crossover pipe.coldtaco wrote:I'm refering to all the vacuum lines that I thought had something to do with emissions. OZ and NZ spec FT's never had the EGR setup. From the Jap 80s i have seen, half have it, the other half dont. And i 'think' all European spec ones have it.

I'm gonna guess that the 78 would be the 4 door and the 79 pickup/troopie?
Can you help me figure out what all of the vacuum hoses are for the emissions?
