Hi all landcruiser buffs;
I have read with interest most of the threads on landcruisers and am amazed at the lack of knowledge on the rarest of all The PZJ73!!
Is there any other owners out there?
I am in the process of doing mine up and would like to hear if any one else has one.
For general info:
The engine is a 1PZ and is an inline 5-cylinder OHC engine. It is naturally aspirated and never came out with a turbo. The Australian model only sold in 1990 and 1991. Often confused with the 3B family which is a completely older generation of engines and 3.4L. The 1PZ has almost identical power to the 2H and alot more torque!
This car is not the SWB (i.e. Bundera) which most people get confused with and the difference to name a few is: FRP top, bigger and stronger gearboxes, diffs and transfers and approx 30cm longer.
Its a great car and gets slightly above 750km/80L tank. Not bad with these fuel prices!!
I have owned this model for 4 years and it now has 420 000km with no touch up to the engine (except injectors) since being bought and I can still pull away from 3L hiluxes.
Most parts are interchangeable with the 75 series but you have to keep explaining to people what model you have. Even most Toyota parts people don't think this model exists.
Anyway, let us know if any other owners are out there or if any one needs more info about Toyota's only 5 cylinder landcruiser.
Cheers
Robert

That is a complete myth. The only part I haven't had to work on is the engine. If you have personal experience, I would like to hear it!
The short production run was only a result of the market steering away from SWB's and MWB's not any engine problems.
the engine is great, it is smooth and quiet and reasonably economical, unfortunately the SWB/MWB offerings priced themselves out of the market and the 1PZ is not much more economical than the 1HZ, to which it is almost identical except for an extra cylinder. There are reports of overheating and head gasket problems but they are probably a result of lack of maintenance/abuse. Any engine in a 7x series might have cooling issues due to the shape of the engine bay and narrow grille.
1PZ responds well to a turbo but afaik there are no aftermarket manifold, however a short adaptor onto the factory manifold works well.
does it have a H55F or R151F gearbox?

I've driven a PZJ70 and thought it was quite good- smooth and adequate performance.
I think the middy with the 1HDT/auto would be rarer - $64000 in 1991
Steve.

Hey Dumbdance!
Good to hear some people out there know something about this one. You would be surprised the arguments I've had with mechanics and even parts salesmen at Toyota that this is not an import and that the model number is PZJ!!!
Funny you ask about the gearbox. It has the R151F and I only got it back 2 days ago and spent $5000 rebuilding the clutch and gearbox (Ouch!!). The problem is today I had to take it back cause it was rough as guts. The shop reckons they couldn't find anyone that sold the Detens springs (or thats what he called them) and that they used other springs which they modified. I thought quite a few cruisers had the R151F gearbox, surely their are parts available! Any advice on this?
I can't afford it now but whacking on an aftermarket turbo has been on my mind (though this thing overtakes no worries). Interesting about the manifold. What brand of turbo would suit this? Would one that suits a 1HZ be able to be put on with a bit of tinkering with the manifold? Which factory manifold did you modify? The original 5 cylinder one or a 6 cylinder one?
Also I haven't had a problem with the cooling system, though I did recondition the whole lot (i.e new pump, radiator, pipes etc) and it barely goes above the low temp mark.

R151F is in Bundera turbo diesel, V6 4 runner, HDJ105 Landcruiser and others in the hilux and landcruier families. it is a fairly common box. Parts should be no problem. In what way was it rough? The detent springs don't usually need replacing although in a high mileage application it can be necessary. If they replaced all the synchro clutches it should be pretty smooth.PzJ wrote:Hey Dumbdance!

I haven't done one on a 1PZ but I would do it by making an adaptor from the factory manifold, with the triangular flange on one end to suit the manifold and the turbo flange on the other, about 25mm long. any turbo for an application that makes similar power to your target (or about 20% more than your target power from a petrol application) will do the job, the Nissan/Garret knock offs in Jap imports are a good place to start, they are cheap and reliable.I can't afford it now but whacking on an aftermarket turbo has been on my mind (though this thing overtakes no worries). problems are most often caused by lack of maintenance. sorry to hear about your gearbox experience. you could put a H55F gearbox out of a HZJ75 in it, a bit stronger. Also I haven't had a problem with the cooling system, though I did recondition the whole lot (i.e new pump, radiator, pipes etc) and it barely goes above the low temp mark.

If your 'roughness' is engine roughness, it could be because the flywheel was not replaced or rebalanced correctly, they are a spring loaded inertial damping flywheel and depending on who you ask, they cannot be machined or rebalanced and have to be replaced. the good news is that you can replace them directly with a 1HZ flywheel and engine roughness is not detectably worse.

The flywheel on a 1pz can be changed for a 1hz item if it gives you problems. I must admit i have never heard of a pzj73. or a hdj73. I do know the shorty 70 came out optional with the 1hz for those years too, and that has always been a rare combination to find.

if you need any parts i think ford holden 4x4 parts at brendale has some of these motors in stock as well as new cyl heads
you cant put the early gbox on as they have a different bellhousing
i put one in a bunderra that was a petrol and had to make up a box as i couldnt get an original.used a v6 4runner box with a 100ser input shaft as they run a differnt length and clutch plate very good motor
put a ct26 turbo on it just made an elbow at the rear for the manifold
was a nice truck shame i sold it
only draw back is availability as the 1hz is soooooo much easier to get party for after you blow it up

The problem with the gearbox when it came back was that it wouldn't slide easily into gear. 1st gear had to be forced in, 2nd gear was actually a bit more to the left than 1st when you slid it into gear and 3rd took 3 different clicks to get the thing into gear. Also 1st had 2 tracks to get into gear (i.e. you could slide it a bit more left and felt like a whole other gear but was still first. Anyone care to guess the problem??
I'm thinking of telling the guy to replace all detents springs and all synchromeshes, I'm pretty sure that should do it.
The problem is you pay 5 grand and you expect the job to be done properly. How hard is it to find a car engineer (not a mechanic) that knows what they are doing

Question. If the 1pz didnt come out with a turbo, then what engine was it? I have test driven a midi with a factory 5 cyl turbo diesel in it. And I also know someone who put a 5cyl turbo diesel into his shorty, were they done for an overseas market? From memory the one I test drove was imported from new guinea. The person who put it in his 40 reckons it wasnt much better than the 3B turboed, that he took out except it reved better.
This is only my opinion of course, but I reckon you would be better off with a 14BT better torque and power figures with only 4 cyl rego, not 6 cyl rego for five cyl engine.
EG 14B non T 177 ft-lbs torque 1Pz 170 ft-lbs torque. As stated above, this is only my humble opinion, but then I might be biased, as I have a 14B in my midi and I love it.

Well, seems anyone can compare engine stats but as long as one is happy with the one they've got
If you do compare 14B with a 1PZ they are very similar figures and I'm sure if I whacked a turbo onto mine it would easily compare slightly better to the 14B-T but as I mentioned, I've never had a problem with my engine.
I've owned the 5 cyl for a number of years and have researched it a bit and if I were a betting man, I would safely say that I am almost certain that a 5 cyl factory turbo diesel from Toyota doesn't exist, at least not in Oz. Though I'm no definitive expert. If anyone has an engine code of one that exists I'm keen to know.
As for rego, this cars rego is the same price as my 4 cyl Bundera I used to own so I don't know where your getting rego prices from. I once coverted a petrol Bundera that had a 22R petrol to a 2L-T diesel. TIP!!! Don't waste your time and money This thing was an expensive lesson in how to underpower a car for thousands of dollars
What year is your 73 series with the 14B-T?

there has never been a factory turbo version of the 1PZ or any other 5 cylinder turbo diesel from toyota. you may have driven a middy with a 13B-T which is about the same capacity as a 1PZ, but only 4 cylinder.
the indirect injected 1PZ has far better torque characteristics especially at low rpm and is smoother, quieter and more driveable than the lower compression, DI 14B-T. beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you want the superior engine stats, the 14B wins. just.
