Transfer case bearings question...
Transfer case bearings question...
Hello all.
I am currently fitting TG 6.5's to my 91WT Sierra. I got my gears and rebuild kit from www.lowrangeoffroad.com (while the AU dollar was still great! )
My question is in regards to the new bearings. The new bearings in the kit all have a snap ring around them - while most of the original bearings dont.
New and old bearings:
This bearing needs to go here:
So, do I remove the snap rings off the new bearings or do I leave them there?
Cheers,
Pez

just as apoint of interest, whoever built your transfer case previous to you did not do too good a job, obviously did not know what they're doing.
the old bearing in the photo is a pre greased, sealed bearing. the bearings should be open for the oil to lubricate them (like the one in the pic with snap ring), the sealed bearings can be used but the seal needs to be removed.
oh yeah, the only bearing that has a snap ring fitted should be the output shaft hirange gear end (front bearing) remove all the rest as others have said.
the input and front output bearings have a circlip to locate them but this is installed into the case, its not a snapring on the bearing.

Hi wrw82.
Yep - Just got back inside after doing all that out in the shed. All the bearings are now replaced, new gears fitted, new seals in, and everything else done as you mentioned. I just need to tap a thread into my breather hole and I can bolt it all back together.
Who knows who last rebuilt the case, or how long ago it was done! Before I even looked at the case I decided to do a full rebuild on it - I am glad I decided to go that way!
I'm also contemplating removing the detent ball - I'm going to have a play with the SEARCH button and see what info I can find on that topic....
Thanks to all for the awesome help!

I got mine from www.lowrangeoffroad.com.
I got the 6.5 gears from lowrangeoffroad which come with some new bearings - but not all. If you are getting gears and want to do a FULL rebuild then you also need to order the "Gear Install Supplement Kit". That is the kit I got. You will then have everything you need.
If you just want to do a full rebuild without ordering new gears, then the "Complete Rebuild kit" is the one to get.
Cheers,
Pez

The job was fairly straight forward. I don't have a press, so I used a combination of hammers, metal pipes (cut down to hammer (press) bearings onto shafts) and a 'puller' to get the job done. The job would have been much harder without the puller.
Everything went together nicely. I have not tested the new gears yet as I'm still working on other bits of the car, but everything seems spot-on. I should have it back on the road by next weekend with a bit of luck! Cant wait!
