what are people using to fuse winch power cables? i run a 10MM cable from the battery to the winch
91 SWB Sierra. 16v 1.6efi, extractors, 6.1gears, SPOA, 32 BF muddys and 2inch bodylift

high power audio fuses are cheap and avilable from about 60 amp to about 250 300 amp
i use about 160 amp i think from memory on my 6000lb winch and ive never blown it although some people here think its not enough
maybe buy the biggest you can
a lot of people dont use fuses or use a isolator switch but i think a fuse is cheap insurance (beats burning your 4x4 to the ground)from rubbing through a 10mm2 cable.(real ugly)make the fuse as close to battery as possible

well most winches seem to draw off around 450amps at max pull.

i will find the biggest one i can

450 amps seems real large :?:
Im not sure 10mm cable even carries that much
ive had my 6000 lb to near stopping and never blown fuse
85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers,ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.

im running about 160 amp
but if you can find bigger id buy that
my fuse was the biggest i could find at the time
juat checked on 10 mm2 cable rating its rated at about 100-120 anp continious but im sure it carries a lot more in bursts

I dont know if ppl realise this but it is possible to run 2 smaller fuses in parallel to get a higher current rating. ie 2 x 100A fuses will give you 200A.

I just mention this cos it might work out cheaper to use 2 smaller fuses then one big one.

On the same line of thought you could use a pair of those 100A circuit breakers so they are easy to reset.

Just a thought.

at least it would give you time to find a short before you have a pile of ash

thats a pretty crappy way of fusing something IMO.

Just buy the right fuse for the job. Then when the fuse blows you only need 1 spare not 2.

It was just a sugestion. I was thinking more along the lines of being able to use circuit breakers. I have seen 100A circuit breakes so a pair of them would work well.

I dont use fuses at all. I use circuit breakers for everything I add. Then I dont have to worry about fuses.

My winch shorted out recently... Boy am I glad I fused it. :D

Where do you find those? I have had two winches - el cheapo Ebay job and an Ironman and both of those shorted stuffing $300 total in batteries.

Make sure when you buy it you also buy extra fuses as they aren't commonly available.
I got two of the big black ones and two of the orange ones as spares delivered for $50.
