Extending bump stops on sierra. How to?

Post by mike_nofx »

Just wondering what methods people have used to extend their Sierra Bump Stops.....

Preferably simple, cheap and effective!

Thanks

I simply used some RHS steel that was as thick as i needed to extend bumpstops down by, then drilled and tapped holes in one side to attatch to chassis, then drilled more holes on other side and bolted bumpstop to the RHS with short bolts.

It's not really feasible to do the rear without welding. Same method though - just weld some RHS to the bumpstop plate on the chassis.

I've seen the rear bolted but it gets a bit awkward and tight.

If you have access to a welder though, I'd be cutting the brackets off altogether and welding the spacer directly under the chassis. You'll pick up heaps of articulation (if your shocks are long enough) and it effectively lowers the roll stiffness once your on to the bumpstop.

Bumpstop extensions

Post by BOGFROG »

How much should they be extended by? say I have a 40mm suspension lift would I extend the bumpstops 40mm or less? what do you think?
Suzuki Sierra: half the size, half the weight, half the cost & twice the fun  why would you drive anything else?

Sorry to Hi jack this thread!!!
I have 30x9.5x15's and the only hammering's been done to the seams on the fire wall if that helps?

Ramp it till they rub and lower your bumpstops to there, if you simply want them to stop rubbing. If you are doing it for leverage flex then start there and lower them till you are happy but they will also need inboarding

AFAIK it all depends on a few factors.

Firstly and foremost is the shock length, you want your bump stops to engage before your shocks bottom out to stop them from destroying themselves.

Secondly you want to stop your springs from breaking, which shouldn't be a problem in most applications but in some (SPOA and removed springs mostly), inverting your springs against their natural curvature is not good past a certain point.

Thirdly you should stop your rig from falling over, there is no point in having more flex than the centre of gravity of your vehicle will allow, My 3/4 elliptic setup for instance is tunable cause it will fall over before the rear wheel will lift.

Lastly and I stress lastly should be tyre clearance. If your tyres foul you should be hammering and cutting and sheeting away at your gaurds till you make them fit to the best of your ability. Failing that then and only then you should extend your bump stops to clear your tyres.

That is my opinion and my opinion only, everyones personal preferance will differ.
