PTO problem

Post by revhead307 »

Gday,

The PTO on my import Safari no longer free spools.
It did when i first used it.

Now it doesnt matter whether the winch hub in on free or locked, it will winch in and out under power locked or not?

I have checked the oil levels in the gear section and they are fine.

What could be wrong with the hub selector?

Cheers

Excessive grease in the freespool sometimes causes it to hydraulic lock. Hopefully its just a matter of removing the 6 allen-head bolts from the freespool and giving it a tap with a rubber mallet to pop the freespool off. Clean out with kero and make sure the internal spring mechanism works properly. Spray the internals with lithium grease and re-assemble.

I'm sure I answered your Q on the Patrol forum, but as GQ TROL says check the hub, it won't be the winch oil and chances are that the drum has seized to the shaft with water, dirt etc. If it has worked previously it won't take much just time trickling little bits of lubricant into the 2-3mm gap on each end of the drum shaft and work it free again.

It's nothing to be guilty of as there is bl**dy good info on both sites so i agree totally. I just know that with the PTO's having very few probs that this is the likely prob with yours, and even then i don't think it happens very often - never heard of it before mine did it anyway. Let us know how you get on.

I'm not sure of what 4wding you do but here's a handy hint if you haven't done it already.

The PTO's have 2 sheer pins, one near the PTO box end and one near the winch end. Remove and slightly drill out the shaft (by 1-2mm) at the PTO box end, fit a high tensile cap screw or bolt BUT you MUST trim it too length so it doesn't catch on anything when the pto shaft is engaged or turning. That way if you do lose a sheer pin under winching it will be the front and easiest one to get to.

Sweet, good advice. I'll get to it on the weekend and post if it frees up.

I've got pretty much the same problem but I'm at the point where the winch is in a few bits and I'm keen to learn more by giving it a service and rebuild.

I got the winch to freespool by trying the tap trick but it seemed to be a bit stiff and was killing the Mrs dragging it out, so I thought I'd free it up a bit.

I'm at the point where I'm trying to get the hub off but I'm not sure if I'm approaching it the right way.
I've removed the bolts that hold the hub on but the hub won't come off, from what I can see the hub should just slide off, is this right?????

any tricks or tips for removing the hub?
