4x4 guy are you an alleged airlocker employee too? its good to see peoples personal opinions and or experiences shot down with great vengence. look out 4x4 guy, they'll be putting words in your mouth soon. and i'm sure the many years i've spent repairing, replacing, building diffs with all sorts off lockers in them, either in the shed or in the mud, has no merrit at at all. so unfortunately next time i think i'll think twice before offering views that others may not agree with. i do appologise for expressing my personal opinion and now relise how selfish that was! :roll:

i have a lockrite in front and i bought a lsd for the rear
and tonight i picked up arb locker which two do i use :?
i ve never used any of them this is the first time ive had them
and it will be awhile before i get her in the bush so id like get right first
and get rid of what i dont need any suggestion :)

well is your air locker for the front or rear? Because that will help make the decision a little clearer, and the that lsds are not true lockers whilst the other two are

yeah thats what im tryin to work out should put it in the front or rear :?:
front seems logical but with the lockrite in rear ill get the racheting sound
everytime i go around the corner which would be wearing it out faster right or wrong and if go the other way, ive been told that they take a fair bit to get used to(the lockrite) and at times can be a bit hairy right or wrong im not sure thats why im on here

Firstly - which vehicle do you have - are the diffs the same front and rear?

I much prefer a selectable locker up front, if the auto locker stays engaged when you want to turn, then you will have a hard time.

I would fit the ARB to the front and the LR to the rear. You will probably get used to any handling quirks, and if not, you should be able to put up with it long enough to track down an ARB for the rear.

Definately made the mind up on LOCKRITE front and ARB or TJM rear air operated, money is not my concern i could buy 2 ARB or TJM tomorrow im just not experienced in lockers so need opinions, i hav heard of ARB leaking air into housings and o rings busting and all sorts of caper.

but on the other hand i just want the cheapest but best combination, are the lockrite any good say if i had front and back lockrites with the rear left in a ditch and front right in the air would the lockrite still drive 4 wheels through, or spin uselessly sometimes..

if an arb leaks it's normally from faulty install. i've got em(arb), i'm happy with them. anything will break or wear fast if you treat it badly though.

Cheap, No ratcheting noises, no clunks, bangs, pigrooting, trying to throw the car off the road, no shimming (in 20,000km so far, never failed to work,happy as, Lockright Powertrax Noslip Lockers.

lockrights won't ever spin uselessly... OFFROAD they are more dependable than a selectable.

I get the bit that you want to know which end to put it but the air lockers are usually either a front or rear locker and can't be just put into whatever diff you want. So the air locker you have is it made for use in the front or rear of your vehicle?

Um, in an FJ73 you can - the front and rear diff centres are the same, so mick&shon could put it in either diff.

Having owned both lockrights and airlockers - definatley go the arb or TJM over any auto locker.

An auto locker in the rear can increase your tyre wear quite considerably as when ever you power through a corner or roundabout you are driving locked.

In the front when in real rough terrain a lockright etc is normally fine but can be an absolute pita on when not in the real rough stuff - making steering heavier and often making the car wonder a little more on dirt tracks etc, you hear people saying just unlock one hub, but that gets old real quickly....

Even in reall rough stuff lockers are not always a good thing and can really fark you up when trying to manouver at times - you dont realise it until you are able to turn them all off and actually see how much easier it is to move around something - can't do this with auto lockers.

They only time I would ever have an auto locker again would be if I was on a very tight budget and just couldnt wait to save up the extra pennies for an arb or tjm, but I know i'd be dissapointed with myself a few trips later for not just waiting and spending the extra and doing it right the 1st time....

I just got off the phone with TJM Woolloongabba (franchise?) and I was told that TJM has withdrawn pro lockers from the market due to problems and they are unsure when they will return.
Im here for the sausage!

1 thing i will say is i had a lockrite in the rear of a 40. never had a problem.
ARB is great as long as everything is working.

You won't have to worry bout that happening. Most peoples problem with them off road is that you can't turn them off and so have to get used to having a bigger turning circle. I have detroits front and rear, would prefer to have air lockers just so i could have a go at some tracks un-locked first.

Gee what a great thread, i hav learnt alot, thanks u blokes, but im looking thru and the ratio of ppl that like lockrite setups and the ones that recommend air lock is close, I wanna make the call soon so maybe Lockrite front and ARB rear, that way no tyre damage on cornering whilst on road and the lockrite is only getting used when my hubs are in....

i'd go the other way around. Lock rite in the rear and air locker in the front. You don't always need the front locked and makes steering a hell of a lot easier, nothing worse tan trying to turn a vehicle with the front end locked by an auto locker

unless u r running longfeild cv's I wouldn't fit an auto locker to the front.

I would run Pro lockers over air lockers, but either of these in the front and run a LSD/open rear if money is tight until you can afford another pro locker/air locker.

I prefer the pro locker for the air actuator, I have had problems with my air locker O-rings (all fitted by ARB stores). I have had a Detroit in the front of a GQ and it sucked, went through CV's like no tomorrow.

I own 1 pro locker and 5 air lockers, I have fitted both brands and had the detroit auto locker. I have no affiliation with any brand, there was an almost identical thread to this one around a month ago, it is a very funny read.

Wozza..... I'm a little concerned you never replaced the rear cross member from either side of the chassis when you bobbed it :shock:

Other than that, the dual cab conversion looks awesome!!! ;)

Yes yes Brighty, its only been on the road a little i only got it all sorted last month, i work 2wks on and 1wk off so i came bak to town done a few adjustments and just drove it!!! The back is getting a cross member put in, the boys behind me said it was twisting up like a 1970's dancer!! not good!!!
Im doing another cab, fully engineered start to finish 61 series cab, no rust!
But lockers first, i wanna see what she is made of, also a set of 4" flexy springs from hobzees 4wd shop and extended brake lines so 3grand more an she will be a weapon!!
Not interested in spring over, its already off tap on the road

e lockers are factory toyota electric lockers (there are also other (aftermarket) electric lockers available these days). They are much more popular in the US than here. I have heard some reports of failure - but I suppose the same principles apply as for any electrical system - keep the contacts clean and dry and keem them out of the way so they can't get damaged.
