NL Pajero

Post by GOONA »

Hey Guys,

I think i've found the one...maybe, i have done a bit of a search but can't seem to find any specifics about any of the pajero's regarding issues and things to look out for when buying.

I've found a 1999 NL Escape model with 165,000Km's, manual, few scratches but nothing bad, most tools still in the tool kit, everything seems to work too.

Now the bad bit(s) are there is an oil leak although not really sure where its coming from but there is some oil which has been sprayed onto the front of the gearbox. Do any of you guys know what it could be? It's from a dealer so they will be fixing it before i pay anything for it...also is the hand throttle supposed to stay on wen you pull it out? As in if you pull it out do you need to hold it or should it stay? The one i found you have to hold it. And the last possible issue is the drivers side window, it seems to be struggling a little, not much but just a little while going up and down. Is this an easy fix or will it cost $$$?

I will be getting an inspection done before i get it too, but what should i be specifically looking for? Last question how much do you think it's worth? I think i can get it at a reasonably good price but would be interested in what you guys think.

Cheers,

Shaun

Hi Goona

The oil leak is probably the plates on the back of the cam covers they have o-rings and is very common and an easy fix. The hand throttle, you pull it out and turn it to lock it out. And the window problem either needs just a bit of lube in the runner or a new regulator which is about $90.

Good Luck!

With those k's you probably won'y get a warranty. If that is the case, buy privately and save yourself some money.
Be prepared to travel here, there and everywhere to find the right one too. This is plenty of rubbish out there. Don't be in too much of a rush to wait for the right one.
Privately that vehicle should be worth about $9-10k if in good condition.
There is one on carsales for $8800 on gas with 143k's.

Thanks crh,

Well i can get it off the dealer for $8500 but will try for 8K and see what he says. He is also giving a 3 month/5,000km warranty with it too which covers absolutely everything and there is no dollar amount on it, which i will be getting in writing as well.

Is there anything else i should be looking out for?

check for service history.

And when you go back, get there when they open and have him start it cold and listen for valve noise (ticking)

It does have a service history, well it's stamped so i'm presuming it's been done.

Regarding the lifters, when i first started it from cold there was a slight ticking noise but it disappeared after a few mins. I put it down to not being driven for a while...is that a big problem or will it sort itself out?
