i have a 1ltr 4 spd, and the box is dying, almost dead as we speak. Just wondering if a 5 spd box off a 1ltr will bolt up? and do i have to get a different clutch? also will it bolt up to the original driveshaft or do i need to change that? any help?
There's no such thing as a 5 speed sierra 1.0 box. 1.3 sierra boxes will not fit, and neither will maruti 5 speeds (which can, apparently, be modified to fit 5th in)
There are 5 speeds behind 1.0 carry vans but these require modification to the shifter arrangement to fit a sierra.
Your 1.0 could pull an overdrive on the highway? There was no way mine could...

a while ago i put the guts from a sierra 5 speed into a maruti 4 speed box and bolted it up to the 1 litre that was sitting in an lj80. worked well most likely because she was so light, the trickiest bit was the shifter. you can chuck a moded maruti behind a 1 litre sierra, but for the effort just buy a wrecked 1.3 sierra and swap the lot over or upgrade to the 1.3 vehicle.

Why does my 1.3 not run now? the only thing i have changed is the fuel filter and haven't really driven it. i had a day off today so i thought id get it out of the garage and wash it. the car idled fine when i started it up but then after it warmed up it died and lost power on stand still. when i take off it loses power and wouldnt stay idled. Now i try to start it and it just cranks and wont fire up. I have checked the fuel filter and replaced it with another, i even tried bypassing it and removing it all together and still no luck.
Under the carb on the 1.3 is this round pie shaped thing...
arrows point to it. its dripping fuel on the lower hose as shown and i cant for the life of me figure out whats wrong with it and why i cant start it, fuel drips when it cranks. - i have had no problems prior to this of any kind. does anyone have any ideas as to why this **** wont go? and yes all the vacuum hoses are hooked up.
Im pretty over it and if this turns out to be a bigger problem ill get it running, wheel it a few times and unfortunately say goodbye to the zook all together.
help please. Yes i have searched and looked all day and troubleshooted as well. thanks
Why does it drip fuel tho??? and what could have caused it to do this?
I was going to head out this arv and get new leads plugs and cap as i thought something mite have shit itself but im not sure why its just all of a sudden stopped working when i havent even left my street with the car for over a month let alone driven it.
Ive had a new cat and muffler fitted tho about a month ago...
Do i need the egr??? Is that the reason it wont fire?
Mick,
If the EGR is dripping, the engine will be flooded with fuel.
Not sure why though.. maybe your needle and seat was staying open and let way to much fuel in.
Disconnect the fuel pump inlet and crank the engine at full throttle to clear it. Until it starts or 15-20 seconds whichever comes first.
Then reconnect the pump inlet and see if it'll run.
A couple of taps on the float chamber usually frees up a stuck needle, but removing the top of the carby may be necessary to clean it out properly.
Problems like this are usually a process of elimination...
Don't get too pissed off as even PRO mechanics sometimes chase their tail with silly little things.
i got it going, then a while later while driving i hit 3000rpm and it died in the ass, spluttering and farting like there was a racoon in the exhaust and it was trying to fart it out.
If your needle and seat valve is leaking, it will slowly overfill the float bowl in the carby till fuel overflows down the carby throat, flooding the motor. When it died did it blow a whole pile of black smoke (over rich).
Layto....

yeah, well the 5 spd is apparently off a santana?? and yeah, Im sort of running out of options yes the 1.3 is an option, but i like my 1 ltr so im trying to exhaust all other means before i do the swap. So the 5spd is a definate no? thanks for ya help
I've seen lots of hard to diagnose crap/intermittent running problems fixeed with a new fuel pump. They're only a diaphragm and don't last forever- they get lazy.
PS I don't think it will be easy to find a Santana (spanish built) 1.0 5 speed in australia, so it's build it yourself from super carry or Joes Maruti/1.3 hybrid suggestion.

It blew the smoke from the carb when i had the filter off, and the inlet line disconnected. It went once only and went PUFF and out it came.

How much is a new fuel pump worth?? Bit wierd tho as the carb is getting fuel and it runs until it dies?? Still mean the pump could be iffy and not pumping enough when the engine gets more throttle??
Mate I had this issue on my 88WT. Tell you what as Gwagensteve said replace the fuel pump, fuel filter near tank, add another small filter near the carb after the pump, flush out the auto choke and heater elements, check your catalytic converter to see if its blocked and I bet that after this it will be fine.
fuel pumps are pretty cheap on the whole scale of things...you won't have to replace it again for a long time!
