hi ive got a 85 middy with 5spd
and im looking at getting marks reduction gears out of 93 hzj 75
will they fit :? my idler shaft size is 32mm anyone know :)

I am pretty sure the HZJ transfer case has the larger idler pin, 38mm I think.

Just be warned that some of the early versions of the reduction gears are VERY noisy. not the sort of noise you want if doing long trips

Mick. i _think_ the difference between the gearset and the model transfer it fits is the bearings put in it...thats why Marks are the best people to ask...im guessing the gears fit all the h55 5 speed transfers with the bearings being different dependiong on shaft size. From memory, 1987 was the year they went to the larger sized shaft (with the hj61 and 2 series square headlight models.
The other thing is, once you go away from std, they do whine...its got to do with gear diameters and teeth contact. Frankos did whine...best to ask him how much...ive been in his cruiser in low range, and didnt notice it, but never on the highway.

I have an 85 I think? LXT BJ74 transfer case, (behind the 302C in my FJ55) and it had the large idler shaft. Possibly Toyota put the larger idler shaft transfer cases on the turbo model cruisers. When i bought a bearing kit for it (from an aftermarket supplier) I was given the smaller idler kit, they had no listing for pre 87 with the larger idler which confused them somewhat.

I'm not sure about the marks reduction gears, but the gears from the 32mm and 38mm transfer cases are not interchangeable.

I had the early marks reduction gears, (purchased in mid 2004) which where very whiney. I believe that they have modified them now so the transfer idler shaft uses conical bearings that I think are adjustable, which is supposed to reduce the noise considerably.

If it wasn't for the noise, I would have kept the gears as they ratios were great. If I was sure a new set would not be noisey, I would definitely get another set.

flyology, what ratio case did you have? diffs? and tyre size how did you find ? they make a big improvement?

I had the

Option 2
High Range .92:1 = 8% Overdrive
Low Range 2.82:1 = 44% reduction

made the low range great for off road, (not that I got to use it) and dropped rpm at 100kph in 5th by around 200rpm.

I was running 31x10.5x15 BFG A/Ts, with H55F 5 speed and 12HT diffs standard 4.1

ratio was great, noise was unbearable... :cry:

i was just talk to a mate and he said just to upgrade my transfer case
cos there stronger and the newer design will be alot quieter and for the price im getting it for i can afford to get a (38mm) transfer case :D they are 1.1 in high and 68% in low so with 4.88s on 35s it should be sweet :?:

Thats going to have an awesome low range crawl! 68% reduction and 4.88
for 35's!!

Currently i run 35''s with stock gearing and low 2nd is still quite useable. low 1st for the stupid steep stuff or really slow
