Why not?

I only have experience of one 2.8 which I helped a mate intercool. It was awesome with the intercooler on it.

I have heard lots of bad about the 3.0, nothing bad about the 2.8 though...

I tyake it you hate it! any reasons why? Is it under powered? it seem to have a lot or car to two around. thats why I'm looking at upping the anti with the 4runner 22R it's not enough grunt once loaded I don't want it to fail me crosscountry in the Simpson :( thanks for the point of view

Not sure why people bag them so much they are way more reliable than the 3litre piece of poo.

if you want to load it up and do long distances dont waste your money.
they are under powered at the best of times let alone with a load on.

and yes to all the 2.8 lovers i have driven a few of them 2 of them boosted with pump mods.
id prefer a 4.2 with extractors, a turbo 4.2 is the go tho if you want to tour with a load on

The 2.8's are under powered and have a tendancy to crack cylinder heads and you don't even have to over heat them. So be wary of investing your hard earned on one. 3.0's after 2001 are ok if not a little heavy on the juice. If you can afford one get a 4.2 turbo and put a 3 inch exhuast and boost contoller on it and you will be pleasantly surprised, with power and economy

I'm no Patrol expert, but I was looking at buying one a while ago. I'm sure that I found that you can buy a power up chip for them that makes them go better.

Thats fair enough, but the 2.8 Patrols can be had for a lot less $ than the 4.2 I think in an ideal world everyone would just buy the 4.2

will this also exagerate any likelyhood of problems such as cracked heads?

Well I took the 2.8 for a drive, nothing wrong with it but it's just more of the same for me. it felt ok but I could not help but feel once i got 130l fuel and the gear on board it was going to be saying "I think I can I think I can" on the hills and undulations. Sooo Not enough improvement to warrant to investment at this stage. My eyes are open for other good desert rats to buy. thanks for the input guys

I wish I lived in Perth!!! I would like to drive this a bit and feel how it drives. I would be interested indeed. But how to do that? I will be in broken Hill in a few weeks want a half way meet? LOL "thats a Joke Joyce" LOL But truly interested in your truck. can you give me some idea of the L/100k you get and the range and L of the fuel tank. I'd be more keen if i did not have to drop a long range tank into it.
0266291076. I'm out to the Simpson in two weeks to evaluate my 4runner in the rough(preparation for a Madigan's line trip next year) If i decide that my upgrade path is a new vehicle I would like to consider this one. Can the Bullbar take a winch?

hey mate, truck is mine.

In terms of economy with my 285 75MTRs i get about 13 -13/5 L/100kms, when i had the BFG ATs(same size) i used to get in the low 10's, somewhere between 10.2 and 11 consistently. Its a great truck at a great price and i cant understand why it aint gone!!! Heaps of emails about it but it all stops there :?

The fuel tank is a 90L plus the standard 30L sub. So with the MTRs you can get about 800 odd kays, if you swapped back to a normal AT you would be getting around 1100. I remember i used to get about 700 before filling up the main tank which would still have about 15L in it. I was amazed how good it was when i first bought it, put my economy went to shite when i put the wranglers on...
