who has fitted, researched, pondered, planned and or considered putting the NV4500 5spd tranny behind a Patrol motor?
I am looking into/researching putting the NV4500 behind my SD33T with an Atlas 4 behind that. Yes I know most of you will have done/considered the NV4500 behind a GQ motor or just a plain old conversion to v8 + NV4500. But that is not what I am looking to do and still interested in any info about fitting this gear box to any Nissan engine.
I think it is possible....

Well...
I was trying to build a Patrol that is all Patrol. I don't live in Aus. and can't get a GQ/GU or I would have just started with that. Instead I have an MQ and went with it for my build.
Problem is now I have 35's and am looking to go up to 38's or bigger. There is no off the shelf options for lower my gearing. I already have 4.6 in the diffs. Right now it is ok for general 4wd'ing but sucks for rock crawling. I basically have no choice for what I want out of the truck, I have to lower my gearing. I was looking at putting a Klune or Atlas behind my stock 5spd but that looks like it may be difficult and also may get real expensive. So now I am thinking screw it just dump the stock gear boxes and upgrade to the far superior NV4500 and then go the Atlas behind that. My diffs are good and built and fitted with ARB's so not going to change them until they are busted into tiny bits! At least as long as I can....offset rear certainly is part of this whole equation.
I have an SD33T all ready to go for build up and I think it can be a great motor if done up right. The only way I will dump the plans for the SD33T and the engine altogether is if there is simply no other option to lower gearing. I am not into the whole v8 thing in this truck, keeping it diesel. So then I could get a TD42, sure it would be a bit better motor (more bottom end bearings for one) and might end up with a bit more hp but power really isn't my issue. Plus won't a TD42 basically have the same problems in terms of lowering gearing? Sure I could go crawler gears in the TD42 5spd but I am after a bit more than just an 83% reduction. I want to be able to keep stock gearing yet have the option to go real low, ie a crawl box, Atlas, ect. I also want rear disconnect so I can utilize my cutting brakes to the max.
I just don't see how a TD42 and GQ 5spd would solve my problems and get me what I want. Fitting the NV4500 and Atlas solves all my probs and gives me some badass boxes in my truck. Alas not Nissan but I can deal with that!

I was not knocking the idea or suggesting you go TD42. I have had SD33 and SD33T and upgraded from a SD33T n 5 speed MQ ute to a TD42 turbo GQ ute.
PersonallyI like your build but would think that it would be cheaper and easier to go with a bolt up motor to the NV4500.
The TD42 would be easier to mount to the NV but it may be posable to make a new 1 peice bell housing for the SD.
I would look toward a different motor for better power and reliability. SD33T's are bad for cracking heads when driven hard.
LS2 would be easy and lighter with better power.
I dont have any MQ stuff to look at anymore to give any advice, good luck with the conversion.
You may be able to to bolt a flat plate from the block out to a ls bell housing?

it is cool man, I didn't think you were knocking my plans. And even if you were it wouldn't matter that much. I would love to have a TD42 GQ Ute but I can't have one until 2013 when they turn 25yrs old. Illegal to import to the USA before then.nastytroll wrote:I was not knocking the idea or suggesting you go TD42. Of course it would be cheaper and easier but that isn't my objective here. I could put a Cummins in it with the NV4500 and Atlas. But then not much left is Patrol or Nissan. Why not just build a buggy at that point? In Oz it may be a bit different to have a v8 and NV4500 with an Atlas but here in the USA everybody has that. I am trying to keep it as much Nissan and Patrol as possible so it isn't like every other truck. Plus I am one of the biggest Patrol-heads around!PersonallyI like your build but would think that it would be cheaper and easier to go with a bolt up motor to the NV4500.

I have a 1977 G60 I plan to do up with v8, dana60's and the like. No plans to do any of that with the MQ, the 77 Ute is better suited for that kind of build up.
right, that is kind of what I was thinking. Either dump the flywheel housing altogether and get a new one made up to match a NV4500 bellhousing or get a custom bellhousing made to match the SD33T flywheel housing and that the NV4500 will bolt to. I was hoping somebody on here had done it to at least a GQ/GU.The TD42 would be easier to mount to the NV but it may be posable to make a new 1 peice bell housing for the SD.
The big prob I think with the SD33T is they get hot. When they get hot they crack heads and more. Plenty of them have done hundreds of thousands of k's without problems so I don't think it is a problematic motor. Hell my N/A SD33 in the truck now is old and tired and still going, I probaly have cracked head and I do have front seal leak and small exhaust leak and she runs hot because I have the timing way advanced. But she still goes. Cooling probs I think can be solved by using an intercooler, better water system and much better oil cooling system. All fairly easy to do. Power wise I think the SD33 can give it out if done up right. Yes a LS2 will beat it any day but I am not looking to be fast, actually trying to make it go slower! With the right turbo/intercooler the SD33 can do a lot....and recently been talking to a guy about putting a super charger on per-turbo to get off the line power with zero lag. I like the fact that the SD33 can run with zero power and has no ECU.I would look toward a different motor for better power and reliability. SD33T's are bad for cracking heads when driven hard.

Ya once again that is what I am hoping.....

Re: NV4500 behind Nissan motor
i am working on an adapter to convert nissan TB/TD to chev pattern! for a winch truck. he will either run the nv4500 or a T400. IMO NV4500 would be sweet - 6:1 granny 1st and 0.7:1 OD 5th. awesome wide range!!RMP&O wrote:who has fitted, researched, pondered, planned and or considered putting the NV4500 5spd tranny behind a Patrol motor?

A 3spd STAK or 4spd Atlas would make it unreal for all types of terrain.
I have a few other urgent projects ATM so i hope to get onto this before x'mas.
