Bit of metal in diff

Post by markc_GQ »

Drained my 88 GQ's front diff last night, and found this stuck to the magnet on the bottom plug:

Anyone know what it is? (the metal, not my fingers :finger:

I'm not hugely worried, just thought I'd check in case I should be :?

I have no idea what that is. Was the oil discoloured or have metallic particles in it? If so it may warrant pulling the centre out & having a look.

i've drained worse outta 20,000km old Landcruisers and Prados at work, i wouldn't bother about it unless the diff is whiny or making banging noises around corners, it looks like a shaving off the crown wheel or pinion, get worried when chunks of gear teeth come out with the oil

Mate, dropped the oil out of the rear (LSD) in my gq tonight and found the exact same thing, along with another little peice. 240,000k's on it, oil was shithouse (only just bought the vehicle). Still drives alright so I'm happy.

GQ lsd's ( or any LSD or that matter) woudl get dirty oil because of the slipping wearing clutches.

Thanks for the advice guys. The oil was in great condition, and there wasn't really anything else in there to indicate issues.

Regarding diff noise, the whole fourby has been sitting on jack stands for a couple of years, so I'll have to wait till I finish doing it up to see if there's any noise, but from memory it was ok.

Anyway, from the sounds of it it should be fine... which is good to hear :)
