hot rods still have to meet road worthy standards and still have to be registered and still have to e safe. They just don't have to be retro fitted with safety features found now on new cars. So that means basically nothing for a 4wd, you wouldn't be able to fit massive tyres, or a massive lift, or have wheels sticking out without adequate coverage etc etc

I agree certain people sould not touch thier own vehicles.I dont however think we need more restrictions on an already heavily regulated industry.
We also offer warranty and have insurance.
One of my good friends operates out of his back yard, but he is qualified, offers warranty and runs it like a business with accountability.
You may be very capable working on your own car, but there are many that aren't. How do you regulate that?? The same way the Government regulates everything. Rather than booking people doing the wrong thing on the roads they make HOON laws so they can take away all cars that look fast. Someone tears up a campsite in the bush, they close the tracks and bulldoze the campsites. Thats just the way it is. I wish the focus was on the individuals who are ruining it for everyone but it isn't.
If this sort of regulation had been in place for the last 15 years we might not have the strict engineering requiements we are currently faced with in Victoria.

LH10 rego is what your talking about.
I wouldn't bother about it for a 4wd.
ADHR regulate it for the trans dept's around Australia and they will be going over a car to the max.
you can buy a LH10 requirments manual they'd be around 50 or so pages long going through every part of a hot rod build and everything that is required for each stage to pass a ADHR look over then a trans dept look over.
there's 3 stages to go through.
also need to be part of a hot rod club to even get a look in.
it's not exactly free and easy to get a LH10 rego not as easy or allows the sorts of stuff your wanting.
nor does it allow to to go driving off down the road to a 4wd park.
as someone else has said, it only really allows you to drive a hot rod to a workshop or mainly to rod shows and you have to be with-in a radis of the home address on the rego so you can't run off from QLD to VIC on a LH10 rego either.
I think it's pretty redundant now though as normal rego has been relaxed a bit so you can rego a hot rod as a normal car now.
it was invented for those people back in the 80/90's to be able to drive a hot rod to a show then back home again, 1 hour max travelling time allowed etc.
People wouldbe better to get clubs to apply to get a special modded 4wd rego than do LH10 regos.

but you can imagine the public outcry as MONSTER killer 4wds are been given a fair go by the Gov, even if they are safer than 1/2 the cars on the road.. Bloke at PMI had a galant with big padlock and chain holding the doors shut.
I agree that we need a provision that is not currently there in the registration laws. I have emailled Vic Roads on 3 occasions in regards to the criterea for Club and Race/Rally reg and any possible provision for 4x4's and have no response. Hence the reason for starting the post. My vehicle would likely be driven at the most a dozen times a year, to the bush for navigational and club events and trailered to winch challenges as the condition it may finish in is never certain.
My thoughts were more along the lines of street rod registration where a 4x4 Body could act as inspector (like the Austrailan Street Rod Federation does) and liase with the State Government in regards to safety requirements, build qualtiy and so on. Lets bear in mind a street rod can be rod registered with coil overs, air bags, large wheels, minimal safety equiptment, large non emmissions controlled engines...sound familiar.

cheap rego....and less restrictions.
you are still restricted with tyres and noise etc etc like normal rego.
you can drive it any time within a 5k radius of where it is kept for service/maintenance etc
other than that, you call up to get a permit number.
this permit number can be for a day or extend to a month or so if needed.
I can drive a hotrod club rego car from NSW to Qld and across to WA on a holiday if i wanted. You just have to give details of the trip. Just basic details like whatever suburb of Syndey to Brisbane for a combined show / holiday. This will still allow you to drive around locally the week or two you might be up there.
Just build your 4wd's to look like a hotrod, join a hotrod club and your away.

Is there a set of rules that outline what is the definition of a Hot Rod???
If we knew what criteria is required then we could see if our trucks can fit into the hot rod category, then all we have to do is get Hot Rod Club to except us as new members.
