GQ 2.8 Gearbox Problems

Post by Marty4265 »

Slowly the third gear in my 2.8 GQ has been dying. It has gotton to the stage that i cant change down to third. (Surprising how much you use it when it isnt available)
What i would like to know is:
1. How hard are they to overhaul (Can i do it myself?)
2. Is it cheaper and easier to replace the whole box with a second hand job?
3. How much is a second hand box?

I pretty sure that it is the syncro ring that has bitten it. And i getting a bit toey that the box might give up the ghost all together. Has anyone ever heard of one of these boxes "Letting go"?
I look forward to any advise that is available out there.

if its the synchro thats gone, you could try givin the accel pedal a squirt bringin the revs up and meshin the gears nicly, take practice, but i put up with it an an MQ for a good 6 months.

not sure on cost wise to fix,

im pretty sure the 2.8 box is similar to that of a Nissan 300ZX or something, so there should be some around.

I have got it sorted in going up through the gears, but coming down i have tried doubling and tripling the clutch, but it still manages to crunch.
Are you saying that a 300zx has a similar (If not the same) box in it?
Why make something difficult when... with a little thought, you can make it impossible !!!

yeah, with the 2.8's they used a box out of one of their sports cars, i think it was the 300zx, but if you give it a day, im sure all the guru's here will correct me if im wrong.
