welding to diff?

need to welded some shock mounts on my diff. whats involved? drain oil? going to be welded to the side of the diff.

personally just weld them on i did mine like that full of oil

If it's on the axletube you'll be OK. Just don't plow too much heat in.

and make sure you take the bung out.. otherwise the pressure might build up inside and blow your seals out

Thats what a diff breather is for.

just had a good look the shock mount is going to be welded on the diff closes to the tires. looking at it its going to be very close (2mm maybe) to where the seals go into. thinking about it its most likely going to stuff them. is there a way to prevent this other then taking them out? thanks as well add.
the mounts i made are from 40x40x4mm 304 stainless. would welding the stainless to the steel be strong enough as ive herd stainless can crack. ive also made up some mounts from 50x50x5mm steel. but being 50mm wider the weld might get in the way of the spring clamps/ where the seal goes into the stainless one should be alright

i have limited welding knowledge, but i would stay well away from welding dissimilar metals, especially in a weld where you want high reliability and the weld is diffcult due to overheating worries. Its going to be heard to cool your seal i'd say... maybe you could overfill the diff so that the seal is sitting in a good amount of oil?

yes but with over filling them the oil will act as a coolant making a cold weld

if stick welding use a 309 stainless rod

Wrap a wet towel around what ever you dont want to melt, ie the seals. The weld will still get hot but the heat wont spread as far.

could welding on the outside of where the diff seal is located effect the shape of the seat that the seal fits into? ie meaning the seal will never seal anymore?

just wondering as it sounds like the heat will only be on one side and could warp it????
