GQ: 2.8TD or 4.2D
My 2.8 with 33's gets around 550 -600 km from a tank, its fairly woeful to tow with (RX 4 on trailer or 20 ft boat) they definetly need reduction gears cause i'm forever clutching it to get it on boost off road. On road, it hauls over my mates 4.2 shorty but it depends what you want. They have terrible head problems (cracking cams etc). Head + parts $1000 if your in the industry.
really depends what you're using it for...if the majority of it's use will be driving you to work then you gotta think about rising diesel prices. When you're towing you're usually wanting to go slower anyway and if you drive it like the 2.8 tonne truck it is then speed doesn't factor in I reckon....I have a 4.2 and when off road it is brilliant, but the several hundred K's to and from tracks start you thinking about how ya can possibly afford a turbo
I gotta say my old MK with factory turbo and the mighty SD33 ( 3.3 litre ) with a 2.5 inch exhaust pisses all over the TD42....even if driving it is less comfortable. Just work out how much power you really need versus economy
That's not to say the 4.2's are overly thirsty especially if you drive em gentle on road.....pant pant good luck
