Intercooler conversion for GQ 2.8
Intercooler conversion for GQ 2.8
Hi All
I want to fit a 2.8/3 Lt GU Intercooler to my 2.8 GQ. Has anyone done this?
Am I going to need a body lift to get the intercooler under the bonnet ?
What is involved ?
How much is a 2nd hand intercooler?
Thanks for any help.
PS I don't need any crap from the 4.2 brigade, about selling It>

best place to find one, at the wreckers. Try and get a intercooler of a 3lt gu as it is better designed from memory, also get the scoupe aswell. And you would probable need a BL to get clearance above the motor.
DTS do a top mount for the 4.2, not sure if it needs a BL or not.
If Stuart (bloke from Bright) is still around he could answer this he had one on his 4.2GQ.
Turps
AS for the 2.8, I have off-roaded in one and I reckon they go alright, easilly kept up on the hwy also.

Why not go with an aftermarket one?? Would be cheaper than GU one to start with. You call Safari and ask how much the kit would be. Be sitting down first.
Thanks for the help.
Safari intercooler kit is around $2500 + fitting last time I checked, It"s a front mount, heard it can block the airflow to the radiator and cause over heating. Heard the Safari kits had problems as well that is wht ARB don"t fit them any more.
Might look at an aftermarket Subaru WRX or similar.
Latter the mightly 2.8 GQ

Your best bet would be to use the genuine I/cooler from the GU 2.8 turbo as at least it will be a straight bolt up fit. These I/coolers also come with a fan mounted underneath for low range work. (even the 3 litres ones don't have this facitity) The I/cooler from the current 4.2 turbo is actually the same I/cooler as used by the 2.8 without even the fan system. It is woefully inadequate for the 4.2 in my view.

If you use the GU 2.8t top mount intercooler you will also need the inlet manifold. As the inlet is on top and not from the bottom
As for a front mount cooler blocking air flow to the radiator `I used the biggest front mount cooler which i could get.
And the engine temps were fine if not better than standard .
The engine pulled hard the whole way up long hills where before`hand
The engine temps would rise and the power drop off.
Just go for a cheep front mount intercooler and get someone to fab up the pipe work It will be well worth it.

GQ with big nuts
Why don't you just sell him your complete setup. Your 454 wont need a I.C. and we need beer money.stool wrote:If you use the GU 2.8t top mount intercooler you will also need the inlet manifold. As the inlet is on top and not from the bottom
