pigletracing wrote:most of the vechicle modles you mentioned I dont recognise, there probably called somthing diferent over here. The danna 44 stuff is used a farebit in buggies,I havent used them, but if they are they must be strong,as for the motor I went for $cheap$ & what was readilly avaliable,as life span in a comp rig is limmited.if the mitsubish are cheap, strong & heaps around sounds good. speeking of mitsubishi, later ones came out with a 3link coil rear end .
its only a little mods to make it an "A" frame 5 link rear end, or how about old dead rangies, there must be heaps of range rovers about,
#power steer I used was Daihatsu Rocky P/S box to the motors pump
The Korando is a korean manufacturer who makes Jeep type of rigs under licensed, the Pajero is the same unit as the Mitsubishi Montero in the US. BTW I would like to inform you that I have seen your rig posted in many sites even before I joined this forum. Our club consider it an "aspirational rig" something we all wish our rig should be. :) Your rig really looks fantastic. I want to build a competition rig here in the Philippines. There are typically 2 categories in offroad competition here in the Philippines. The 4 cylinder class and the "open" class. I want to join the 4 cylinder class, that is why my first choice is a mitsubishi 4G63B with turbo. It is a 4 cylinder 2.0L turbo engine generating from 190HP to 290HP depending on the model and the set-up. This is the same engine used by the lancer evolution series. There are many spare G63B engines and transmission here originally used by the Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero.

I am getting conflicting advise as to how I will do my suspension setup for the rear axle though. Some are so gungho with a coil spring suspension for the rear, while others insist that a leaf spring suspension for the rear is much stronger without any disadvantages as long as you have a good articulation. From somebody who has been there and has a lot of experience, what is your opinion on this?

p.s. offroad racing here in the Philippines is mostly mud, tracks that go up and down, water crossing and short stretches( 100 meters) of boulders. So it is actually a test of driver and vehicle skills in navigating different kind of offroad terrain.

coil suspension 100% it works so much better..most pajerao's (later modles) have a 3 link coil rear end, if you use the paj as your donor vechicle your already 1/2 way there, as it has the motor & g/box - transfer case you already want to use,Id start with the complete paj with the motor/g/box setup you want, the rougher the body the better( as your only going to throw the body away)strip every thing out of the body you might use ie instruments, steering colums ect, then get rid of the body..now your down to the chassis & running gear with motor box & a 100 miles of wiring..the first thing id do is take out the IFS front end & put in a coil live axel front housing in,& conect it up. then change the rear set up from 3 link to a 5 link by making trailing arms upper controll arms & a drag link or an "A" frame, now you should have a full coil front & rear running gear with the motor & box set up you want, with no need to worry about powersteer radiators ect as you will use the orriginal stuff where it is.the last bit is easy pick your body maybee even a terrious make your new body mounts & on she goes

If it's a competition truck only wouldn't it be better to just get a Mitsubishi Pajero SWB or a Land Cruiser 70 series SWB chassis which has all the stuff to begin with like the ideal gearbox, axles, transfercase, solid axles, and just put the Feroza body over for show.

Well end of the day i believe in using parts that are easily available.

4G63 should be a decent 2 litre power plant being an over square engine, more stroke than bore which would help with the lower end.

Other 2 litre power plants u can consider is the SR20DET (Nissan), 3SGTE (Toyota), or even the 1G inline 6 supercharge (Toyota) whihc would have the best low end delivery compared to the rest for a 2 litre.
My RIG sucks big time.

Hey pigletracing, godzilla, I am very inexperienced in this matter, would lj 70 prado/bundera axles be strong enough for racing using 35 or 36" tires? The typical race would be a combination of deep mud, ruts, water crossing, simulated hills and big boulders simulating rock crawling. I am seriously considering your suggestions and what is readily available here would be 70 series prado/bundera axles . I'm thinking of buying the whole frame + underchassis of the prado because it uses all coil spring then just put the Feroza body as you said. Some people are saying the prado axles are not rugged enough? In your observation is this true? tia

I used toyota bunderia front for 3 years, I never broke an axel, but I did break a total of 5 CV joints & 2 x 4.88 ratio diff centres, I dont think that is too bad for 3 years of compition work, the imported prado coil front end is used a bit over here for conversions, Laurrie Sternback, has a moded tojo hilux with the prado front end, & a tojo soara V8 with its auto,& competes in events all around aus, drives harder than me,comes home in higher positions than me,& breaks very little.he does run stregnthened CV's, whitch are availabbe everyware,

I assume when u mean Prado(Japan) it means Land Cruiser II (Malaysia) or Bundera (Australia)?
Landcruiser 70 series with 3 links coil setup?

Well just to make u happy in Malaysia it is the most common competition setup. Even for the Rainforest Challenge.
I'm serious, right down to the links.
And we do it to our Feroza, Rockys, Jeep CJs, Toyota BJ40s, Suzuki Jimnys.

So it's a good move to run that setup.
But sometimes for the effort i think u're better of to just buy a Prado and plonk the body of your choice over it.
My RIG sucks big time.

Thanks pigletracing , I finally found a 3 door Jtop Pajero that was in very good condition and excellently priced to do my SAS convertion. I decided
to use LC 40 series axles because they are the most widely available surplus with many accessories such as new R&P and lockers or LSD. They are also rugged enough to use with 36" tires with little problems. Thanks again.

yes jav is right..Id be looking at a stock GQ nissan patrol,
hopefully a imported 4.2 safari nissan, as they have 24volt systems..
THE REASON IS>>> there is a new comp that has started. vechicles
have to be kept standard, & only minor mods are allowed.
eg 3" suspension lift max.
33" road rated tyres max.
no modified winches. ect ect ect..
but I havent decided fully yet, but im getting pressure from major sponsors
to go that way,,
SO.....IF THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE IN DAIHATSU LAND,who wants to buy the worlds tuffest daihatsu feroza,PM me,
this rig is ENGINERED & complied, & comes with 12months NSW rego, there are a few things that will not be sold with the truck,ie winch difflocks(i will replace with other diff centres) wheels & tyres (will replace with other mags & tyres)
will have all the spares ie CVs ,drive shafts, trailing arms, fule pumps, power steer pump, alternators, startermotors, draglinks ect ect
this will be a very regretfull sale I will sell her in the mid $20k range,
would consider GQ as part trade

Cool piglet.... Qld was just a bit far to go for a look :P

Give us notice when your competing, I'm sick of being the only Feroza that seems to play offroad in Melbourne and the FatRoza might just drag my cred up from zero....

yes MM the deal has been done, the bloke in vic is trading me a GQ SWB & cash change over, hees geting a new lpg system put on as we speek (at my request) b4 we do the exchange. He has to save up some coin for the change over 1st, so he is sending me his GQ as a deposit until he comes up with the coin. the reason for the new owner secrits is that he hasnt told the bloke he has been naving for (about 6 years now that I know of) that he has baught his own comp rig.
# he gets the fatroza.with rego papers & engineer sertificates
# all the spares
# car trailer
# all the sponsers are staying with the car ie Mickey thompsan
Staun
Lightforce
Durashock
so that means new tyres, lights , internal bead locks, shocks & spares ect

hay GONZO the fatroza is sold, I still have her with me until the end of march 09 for the QLD 4x4 show, then the new owner will take her to Melbourne,I have raced with the new owner for years & he has been a Navi in some of the prominent rigs in events as OUTBACK CHALLENGE, ALPINE CHALLENGE, ATECO WINCH CHALLENGE ect, he is not going to compete in her for some time as he feel obligated to the team he is in at presant,& basicly just wants to use it on club trips, & club events until he is comfortable with her. my new project arrives next week, it will be a SWB NISSAN PATROL... yes I know !!!!

in the DVD she was all over the place as an adjustable trailing arm let go, then the rear dif swung away on one side, then snapped a shock in two.
replacing the trailingarm was easy as it is a spare part I carry, that makes up part of my rollcage support, but I unloaded most of the spares (including the spare shock) for the foto shoot, so I drove all day with only 1 rear shock..
