Hi all,
As you have mabey read in my other threads i am currently fully rebuilding my Turbo 2H out of my HJ 75 and as you can well imagine i want to get the best out of it that i can.
My main use of this truck is as a work vehicle as i am a self employed contractor in the commercial building industry and most weeks it will travel 800klm +....... and in the past it has been known to run a little warmer than i'dd like with temps spiking to 95deg + when pushed on the Hyway for long periods or woirking hard on the sand
The Turbo Kit is a AXT type and i am aiming to run approx 8 - 9 pound boost.
As i live in Qld i have already made a modification to the radiator in that the top inlet pipe has had a bend fitted inside the top tank so as to push water accross the top of the radiator better as oppossed to the water trying to take the shortest route to the outlet directly below the inlet.
I will also be ensureing that it only has a 82deg thermastat also.
As my thread title suggests i am also considering the idea of also fitting a bonnet fed intercooler to help the high temps up here and would like to here from other who have done the same , and what benefits were acheived .
I don not want to run a intercooler in front of the radiator as i beleive that is only going to reduce the air flow to the radiator so in the end probabley not acheive anything ei steal from peter to pay paul if you get my drift.
Yes mabey in the past the injectors and pump were not set properly and this is probabley what was causing the higher temps , but after spending the 3 - 4k i want this to last , and we are goint to dyno it this time to ensure the best chance of a long life .

in a 75 series the top mount intercooler is the way to go, there is just to much other stuff in the way to mount a front mount one. Also if you want better proformance then yes. I havent done mine yet, But im running a dts turbo in a 1hz engine and running around 12 pound through her. and if i intercool her she will pritty much double proformance from what is now. I think without turning the 1hz not to familar with the 2hz, but the 1hz goes from 92kw and 220Nm to around 180kw and 340Nm by adding a turbo and water to air intercooler. so if you want the proformance then yes, if not then i wouldnt worry about it becuase it will cost another grand or soo to do it.

As i fabricate all my own gear i figure it should only cost me approx $400 as most of the cost is in the intercooler and a bonnet scoop which are both items i either cannot fab or wouldn't bother trying too and all other items needed are easily made with my sheetmetal gear.
Plus i'mm more after the cooling benefits of the cold air induction than the performance , but it will be nice to have a little more grunt too.

May be a PWR barrel cooler would be the go. Fucking expensive but probably right up you alley as far as performance goes, not to mention that it works even at idle.

put a intercooler on it, it makes a hell of a difference. i put a top mount with a thermo fan underneath it on my lux and it keeps the engine temps and EGT's down much more than you would think.

My understanding is that it's not the turbo housing itself that heats the air. The air temp rises as it is compressed. Hence the air will be close to ambient temp when not on boost.crozza wrote:Ever wondered how hot the air actually is when fed from a turbo into youre motor?
I have a 1hz with a 9 psi turbo. I was curious how hot the air gets when fed into youre inlet after driving all day. So after a recent long drive I pulled up in the driveway and quickley pulled the inlet pipe off and felt the air from the turbo. to my surprise it was only luke warm. Balancing on a moment of insanity I put my hand on the turbine housing itself (not the exhuast side ) and the housing was barley luke warm.
I always thought an intercooler was only there to make the air cooler so it was more dense to which it gives you more power, not to really "cool" the engine.
No doubt the engine may run cooler but I doubt it would be of a major difference.
i'm a toyota bloke and aint gonna like payin somethin toyota out, but they aren't well known for there temp gauges, i own a 2.8 td hilux and painted my heat shield on my turbo with heat proof paint, and the paint has burn marks on it where the bolts go through it to the turbo housing. and on a number of occasions theres been smoke commin off it mainly from burning oil leaks but still, the temp gauge goes up but it not as sensitive as i'd like, sure she's pushin 14 pound but still that hot. i would recommend investing in a water temp gauge and or a pyrometer. a top mount intercooler would be the way to go, just having a cooler air flow will make a difference might not be noticable but your engine will thank you.

How hot do you reckon the turbo surface is getting? How much of this heat is transferred from the ex. housing, thru the comp. housing and into the intake air? i was using heat resistant paint what ever that's rated to i think its either 600 0r 1200 C but couldn't tell ya, but it was designed for manifolds i think, not to sure. alot of it would've been from exhaust temps, the water temp guage went up a few times so she'd been hot, so if the housing's hot it means the engine has little chance of gettin cool air in, which is where the intercooler would be beneficial. the intercooler will make a noticble difference in that department, allowin your engine to run more efficiently through less heat loss and biuld up.dogbreath_48 wrote:How hot do you reckon the turbo surface is getting? When i do fit the intercooler soon i will try and remember to take plenty of notes prior to the change noting mainly things like engine temp , laser read external pipe temp and exhaust post turbo temps before and after and hopefully at that point our great moderators can make this thread a sticky in the 2h bible thread

The intercooler helps many things by reducing the on boost air temp
it will reduce the load on your cooling system by lowering the egt and more imortant internal cylinder head temps because the air going in is up to 60 degrees cooler to start with before you add fuel and set it on fire!!!
It will give more power due to the more dense charge (contains more o2 in the cylinder)bigger bang!!
if you put a top mount on put a thermo fan on it as this will ensure it works all the time (even at idle) as is the big claim of water intercoolers
as long as an air to air has a steady source of cool air flow then it will be
working other wise they can become an inter heater at low road speeds due eng bay heat soak
I did lots of testing with various temp probs
the top mount air out putwas rising above 85 deg at idle due to heat soak
installing the fan put them back to ambient

Im looking at getting the intercooler, Rocker cover and Intake manifold off a Prado 3.0TD and bolting it onto the top of my hilux engine.
If you get the Prado ECU im told its good for taking the power from 85kw/295nm to 96kw/345nm
