Whats the best GPS setup for competition i know the magellan fx324 but they dont make them any more and im struggling to find one, i dont want to do the laptop thing.
what els is there without spending massive $$$

Depends on the comp I guess. You wouldn't really need one for tuff truck for example

coops and hummer use an old garmin, not even number buttons, still scroll, with no mapping and always finish top 5 in nav sections in obc. its the driver driving the machine.

he's a top bloke and its got everything you need at a realistic price.

My FX324 has sold....

The FX324's are the best GPS for comp use, simple, easy to use, accurate and quick processing. In this years OBC a lot of "newer and better' GPS were having troubles at viwmont, spending at least 20 mins to find a point.

Steph and I had our 324 in our GU wagon and tried it on the run at the end of the week, the unit was faster and better than other $2000+ units.

I think the problem with most of the GPS's this year at the OBC, was due to the owners putting to much mapping on them at once. They would have done better with having a NTH and STH map set.
As Juzza's FX was slow as shit. But it had most of Aust on one region. We had places where it locked up for upto 5mins. Where as in previous yrs I have used Matts and it would update straight away. But he had many small regions.

As for looking for a GPS, dont get the big arse Garmin. They just take up to much space.
I also agree don't go the laptop route. Yer it will do heaps of cool stuff that might help. But no point in having something that doesn't like water/mud/dust.

Yeah, what Turps said. Keep your regions small and focused on the local area, the GPS handles it much better.

I've got a FX324 that I would be prepared to part with for the right price.

Also check for I think Garmin2002 series. I think there the smaller of the garmins with a proper number pad.
The Magellan should be cheaper as there yrs old and out of date. They still work well though. I wouldn't pay over $700

I totally agree, our FX has no base map for australia and we only insert the SD card with Discoveraus for transport stages. The black and whites are quicker than colour FX's, but the non Australian ones without the base maps are quicker than the Australian ones with oz base map...it that makes sence...

I always use my old Garmin 162, easy, fats enough and big screen. As backup I always carry a Garmin II+.
In the tow and travel rig I use a CarPC hooked up to a GPS unit with all sorts of navigation software up to 1:50.000 topographic maps.

Garmin 2006c (ebay usa has refurbished 1's for reasonable price) looks to be the go, but I haven't heard of anybody having had any experience with them in terms of loading maps and general usage....

I have a meridian Platnium. They don't make them anymore. But can be found on ebay every now and then. I have been real happy with it. Never had any major issues that couldnt be fixed by just turning it off then on again. And have used it walking, riding both MTB and Dirt bike and used in the car. When in the car it got used as a speedo for 3yrs (maybe more).
But because I had it wired up to the aux batt. I think I once left it running for other 6mths.

I cant remember what Magellan are upto but I have used a mates explorist 600. Which has worked well on a dirtbike.

Both are easy to use. And batts last a day if they are good alkalines. Rechargables are only good for maybe 4-6hrs (they where 2600-3000mah NmH)

Never tryed maps on the 2006c but used one at Cliffhanger and found it much better then the FX324. Heaps easyer and simler to get around the menus, nicer screen to look at and heaps more display options. Cheeper than the FX too (except the odd bargin)
