Hey guys...
my coily is makeing a very strange knock sound at idle..

its NOT a big end.. as the noise is from the wrong part of the motor..

its also not the right pitch.. its more of a tinny knock then a actual knock..

it only happens at 1500-2400 when cold... as soon as it heats up its all good..
the engen is on its way out.. But im very intrested to know what this is..

it honislty sounds like gundgen (SP) pin ish...

its the wong pitch to be cam or folowers etc.....

any ideas?

i can pretty much say your correct.. coily's had a major problem with the first series of engines with the piston number 3 or 4 letting go..

Piston skirt shattering on number 3 piston? As Mark said, coilers had big issues with pistons.

ok well its knocking now when cold.. how long do they usualy take to detonate?

coilys started in 96 i think?

when i bought my coily it was rebuilt at 80000ks cause of piston problems.
look at a 1.6 vit conversion,
it will eventually happen again even if you rebuild it.
thats what i will do in another 40000k

My early 96 leafy made the same problem so the new motors must have been used it the last of the leaf vehicles

Can someone try and explain to me the sound in noobish terms? Iv got a 96 coily and im just worried that this may be the sound im hearing when cold!

how soon would this happen to the engine mine is a 96 coily and just about to hit 200 thousand and was woundering if this could happen to mine still or would one of the previes owners have fixed it?

Just make sure the crank pulley bolt has not come loose, have seen that a few times.

Hahaha, how do i turf this lil man out, im afriad my coily sounds alot like that :(

Just a rebuild kit, will that cover it or do i go shopping for a vit?

Till you strip the motor its hard to guess 100%, but if it is the typical coiler piston fault, you will need a rebuild kit and new pistons at least. If the pistons have started to fail or dropped a skirt, or when they fail, then they may have scored the bore as well. Depending on how bad the scoring is you may even need a new block.

the piston skirt broke on my sisters coily, it drove no problemsfor a week or 2, but we drained the oil which didnt show any signs of damage,

so we pulled the motor out and removed the sump to find some big chunks,

we had the motor rebuilt top to bottom, hope we dont have any dramas again,

well no nead to worry about my motor anymore... :roll:

having massive issues with it today and well and truly cooked it.. it still runs the the taps.. now knock.. its over! :armsup:

so it died of natural causes :armsup: (sticking thermistat and no one on the trip had a shifter to pull the fawking thing out!!!!)

ah such as life!! pick up my new leefy motor next weekend!
