CHALLENGER ( V6 3000 ) TIMING BELT KIT $$$$$
Hi folks, I enquired at my local Repco this morning about the price of a timing belt kit for a Challenger ( 24 valve V6 3000 motor ) as in Pajeros I believe.. Is $ 375 for a kit ( that includes idlers but not a hydraulic tensioning device from the catalog listing ) a fair price ???
I am in Brisbane. Is there a more cost effective supplier ?
Thanks...
PS At 92 000 ks should the idlers and/or waterpump be replaced too ?

If it is the same as a 24 valve Pajero then it'd be wortth while doing tensioners, and water pump as it is quite a job to get into the motor.
And it's peace of mind.

I have just bought timing belts, spark plugs, gaskets, a set of HT leads and a water pump for my Pajero and my wife's Magna. I looked around on ebay and found a mob in Newcastle from memory. They were reasonably priced ($A175 ??? for the timing belt kit (belt and idler pulleys)).
I then looked on ebay international and found a mob in the US. Timing belt kits were $US 60. Spark plugs were less than half price compared to what I could get here. The only problem was the cost of shipping. All up, it was quite a bill, but I got it all about half the best price I could find locally. Mind you, since then, the $A has gone south well and truly (I got 78 US cents per dollar), so you may be better buying locally.
The mob I went to was www.rockauto.com. They are a yankee mob, and quote parts for the US fleet. Extensive range of parts, and I did a lot of research to try to ensure that what I ordered was what I needed. It turned out oK in the long run. It took 1 week from placing the order until it arrived on my doorstep. Something in the back of my mind told me that Rockauto was a bit of a sus organisation (hence I used paypal to supposedly protect me from scamming), but they were fantastic.
If you go down the yankee path, I suggest that you carefully review what parts you need. I was lucky because I had kept the original timing belts from the first change, and was able to verify them before ordering (I counted the number of teeth on the belts). The 3.0 L 6G72 engine in the Magna uses a different timing belt to the 6G74 engine (3.5 L) in the pajero. If you want some further assistance with the timing belt etc, email me and I'll see what I can find. You may be able to find out this data by logging on to www.dayco.com.au and then using the part numbers to cross reference the US site..
For the local supplier, I scanned though ebay and found something similar eg timing belt for an older Magna, then approached the seller directly and got prices from them for what I wanted. I still bought through paypal, so ebay can't get their noses out of joint,
Yes, I was sceptical, but equally I was daring enough to try it and in this case, succeeded quite well.
If you need any help, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The pajero 3L was both a 12 and 24 valve engine, depending on the yrpickle wrote:Not really the same motor as a Pajero although they are both 3 ltrs the Challengers run 24 valves as to Pajero's 12 valves. The 24 valve Pajero's were 3.5 ltrs. Certainly is worth changing your waterpump as well for peace of mind. I think Repco will be about as cheap as you will get.

No. Australian Pajeros never received a 24 valve 3 litre engine. Any you may have seen are either imports, or transplants (essentially the same block, so simple.)bakerboy wrote:The pajero 3L was both a 12 and 24 valve engine, depending on the yrpickle wrote:Not really the same motor as a Pajero although they are both 3 ltrs the Challengers run 24 valves as to Pajero's 12 valves. jst did a mates 3.0 v6 12v TB last weekend, $153 from veale for timing kit (includes belt and tensioner pulley).
my NH motor is currently being rebuilt by southside engine recon and they are charging $115 to supply timing belt kit (i am putting mtr back together). You could try your local engine recon place? don't forget to buy new crank bolt from mitsubishi $21, and may as well do front crank seal while yr in there

Thanks for all the advice. I had to return to Repco this morning. Their Dayco catalog reference ## for the power steering pump belt is wrong ( as available on their wedsite ) and so the sales man referred to the original Mitsubishi belt that carries a code about the belt length... right belt and it is all back together.. next time I play will be the timing belt experience... they have a belt, a kit with belt and seals , and a belt kit with seals and hydraulic tensioner all on the shelf... good to know.
No problem with changing the 3 drive belts really. It really is a very nicely made piece of machinery and reasonably accessible. Hope I will be saying that after the timing belt replacement exercise in a few months.
Thanks for the engine recon tip.. good to keep in the back of my head.
