TF 4JB1 Top Mount IC Update
Hi all,
Just an update to the last post about putting a top mount cooler off a 3.1 Bighorn on my 2002 Rodeo.
It all bolts up no dramas to the original inlet manifold, just make sure you get all the mounting brackets with the cooler if you're gonna do this mod too. Had a few issues when it came to rotating the turbo compressor housing, had to drill and tap another M5 hole as only 4 of the 5 housing bolt holes lined up. Also had to fabricate new mounts for the wastegate actuator. All up took prob 3 or 4 hours to fit.
Had to cut a fair chunk out of the bonnet bracing as the cooler and the plastic surround sit pretty high. A 1" body lift would give heaps of clearance but i wasn't keen on that. Marked out and cut the hole in the bonnet using the rubber boot as a template and hey presto, we're done!
The cooler made a noticeable difference in low RPM torque but not massive amounts. In the next week or so it's gotta get Dyno'd and the pump and boost pressure tweaked to suit. Will let you know how that goes.

The other thing to think about before you get it dynoed is a 2.5" exhaust with a high flow muffler.
That and a dyno made such a difference in performance to mine that it stalled the intercooler project I was going to fit. So an intercooler + 2.5" exhaust + dyno, the bugger should fly, you wont recognise it as the same car.

funny you mention the exhaust, it's in today getting a full 3" mandrel bent system inc dump pipe... probably overkill but 3" just looks tuff guzzi who did you get to dyno your truck? i've rung around a few places and at this stage i'm looking at taking it to Motson's at rocklea... any suggestions?

best i've ever got out of my truck is 8.3 litres/100km, i think that works out to around 700k's from 60 litres. my rodeo is my daily driver and work ute with steel tray and toolboxes etc so it's pretty heavy (2.4t on a weighbridge!) i've heard of guys in dual cabs with canopies getting a bit better than that. i've only put two tanks thru it since i put the intercooler on but doesn't seem to have made any difference to fuel economy. what you getting out of yours?

Ive had 9.5l per 100 k, fully loaded sitting on 110kph
Ive had a best of 11.2 l per 100km towing a 1 ton camper with 4 onboard at 90kph
Ive had a worst of 17 l per 100 km towing a 1 ton camper with 4 on board in soft sand on Frazer Is.
The actual figures are probably better than that as I have a 6% odometer error due to the tyre size.
I can pretty much bank on around 10l to 10.5 per 100 in general driving.
