Long shakels good or bad
il start at the start i have a beam axel surf that had 33s just got some cheap 35s they only just rub when turning and flexing. so i wanted to get some long shakels for a quick fix before body lift. i rang a couple of 4x4 shops and they dont stock long shakels because they put to much stress on mounts and springs and is prone to snaping shakel mounts. any one had this problem. and do the shakels that fold open and close have this problem as well?
im just doing body lift but wood like to get sme folding shakels as well

35s are fine for normal driving its just when flexing and turning at the same time il do boby lift soon all the bolts are exposed now and ive got the blocks and bolts
i was only goa gona go 2inch shakels but i was told even that was to much just wana no what some others think. as the places i called all sell other parts and im wondering if they dont sell shakels cause they would rather sell other stuff thats more expensive thing new spring.

most people make their own shackles to suit their needs... theyre dead simple to make up youself so shops probably dont sell a lot of them.
theres heaps of tech. in the suzuki section on drop shackles / missing link / scissor shackles - the general thought is "dont bother".

The distance between the front spring mount eye and the lower shackle pin when almost fully back should never exceed the lineal distance between the eyes of the main leaf.
The 4x4 shops you spoke to were right what they said. Shackles that are too long will try to "stretch" the main leaves when flexing. It eventually flattens the spring out and ruins them. It will also shag out your bushes quick and maybe rip spring mounts off. This is why extended shackles are illegal full stop. The only way longer shackles will work is if the main leaf lengths are in proportion to the distance I first mentioned.
The Superior drop shackles just allow extra droop, they arent going to change anything when youre cornering as they should be pinned on the road.

the shackle has to be the same if not better material than oe AND the same length as oe, otherwise they are not legal.

If you increse the length of the spring so that at ride height the shackle is 45deg you will get extra travel. Think ifs rear spring in hilux with 200mm shackle. It works, my hilux used to have that exact setup.joeblow wrote:mmm....the longer the shackle the more wheel travel?....what a load of shite!
But yes, the same length spring with longer shackles wont give you anymore travel, just more lift.
Yes it will also put extra leverage on the mounts but I never had a problem at all with cracked welds or broken mounts and I used to give the thing a hiding.
Oh, and yes they are illegal.
