I can get a T25 pretty cheap. I understand it has lots of fast spooling capacity but won't make lots of top end power. Sounds good for the bush. Would it be a good choice ?

A T25 is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too small for a TD42. T25 is the OEM turbo on an RD28T. Runs out of puff around 140-145hp, been there, done that. Have a GT2871R.86AR on my highly modified RD28T, 12mm plunger, FMIC, gas injection, water/meth, heaps more, this turbo would suit a TD42 just fine.Mario wrote:I can get a T25 pretty cheap. use a t28 with a .86 housing, get it hi flowed and use a MTQ turbo manifold and a reducer and there xover piping, i used it and it boots about 1100 revs and gets 10psi all the way through the range till about 3500, then its out of puff. 3 inch exhaust from turbo to the back straight through no muffler, sounds sweet and goes pretty damn hard too.
I'm thinking of putting a turbo setup together for my TD42.

T25/T28 manifold flanges are all the same (except possibly a split pulse {separated} manifold outlet).
T3/T4 are the same, with the exception of the above as well.
The actual exhuast turbine outlets (where the dump connects) have up to 4-5 different bolt patterns for each size turbo.
T28 is known commonly as a T2 flange, i got the turbo brand spanking from evilbay. Did a fair bit of research on here first see what people had done first up.
MTQs manifolds are a low mount setup, hence its what got me thinking of using a T28, due to the early boot up and pretty much being able to hold steady boost, also they are the right way around for a low mount setup. IE hot side is upside down already, like the mitsu turbos. MTQs xover pipes were set up for this too, so i thought great, thats another problem solved...but how to get a T2 flange on a T3 manifold outlet... Easy solultion buy a reducing bracket from them T3 to T2.
I bolted it all together then thought, "fuck me" i never thought about how the dump pipe would work, so i bought a T28 cast back and welded my own pipe straight to it and to the exhaust. I die grinded the hole out in the back of it to almost 3 inches and welded the new 3 inch pipe to it, creating a 3 inch dump.
Then i had a 3 inch exhaust lying around the w/s and took it and fitted it all up. Ran all the water and oil lines from the usual spots, and tuned it as best i could with what i knew, IE fuel screw.
I fired her up the first time and i thought ok sounds good, i could hear the whine of the turbo in the exhaust etc, that nice note you get from the 3 inch straight through and i reversed her out of the w/s and booted it around the car park. Initial thoughts were along the lines of FARK as it booted up hard, went straight up to 10psi. Im yet to still have it tuned correctly, and the pyro installed but im guessing the temp has not gone above say 650 deg at the exhasut and that was gassing it up Mt ousley, which before i did the turbo i had to come up in 3rd with the 35s, now i can almost do it in 5th.
All up st up cost me around 1200 only because i had access to alot of the things and got alot of the bits and pieces IE manifolds at trade prices. Anyway it worked for me. Its just another way of getting around it without buying a whole setup. I have an intercooler, its a front mount but i dunno how im going o get the piping to work as of yet.

i have a solution too for the airbox fiasco, if u can get one of those round ones from a GU ive heard they fit with an arb dual battery setup. My mate here runs the piranah battery tray and it works. I think however they are a bit smaller. Not 100% sure yet if it will work with the arb one. Im actually going to test it now you have bought it up.
I have all pictures and things of how i set mine up and a setup step by step, i took photos of everthing i could. I think i shall do a write up on it. first ill make sure though i can fill in all the blanks with the photos i have though.

figjam, i did some scratching around (re: air filters) a few months ago and it looked like the GU zd30 box was the go. Although i could never find a definate answer as to dual battery setups etc. It will be good to see what you come up with!
I have a GU ZD30 box in my GQ on a N/A setup (getting ready for Turbo TD42 or a V8 conversion) and i have the 2nd battery in the normal place near the water bottle, still fits, just tightfigjam, i did some scratching around (re: air filters) a few months ago and it looked like the GU zd30 box was the go. Although i could never find a definate answer as to dual battery setups etc. It will be good to see what you come up with!

I'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong, but in regards to the "cheap" KKR (and most likely alot of the cheaper chinese units), PEER drift team actually had/got sponsorship from KKR i think it was, and used their turbo's for a whole season without any dramas. They copped the usual rediculous boost and hammering that a normal drift racer would hand out.
None of th units ever shat themselves, but longevity was nothing compared to the proper $3000 Garrett units that they normally use.

The young bloke I helped with the KKR480 got it new and real cheap, it replased an old Garrett that had shat itself. He used to run a KKR on a drift car and was real happy with it.
The GQ goes better now then with the old garrett.

Yeah 3 of my m8's use the kkr430 on their drift cars and give em hell. Never seem to have a prob with them. CAn get onto a cheap new one, so think it might be a go. Cheers for the opinons boyz. Keep ya posted.
Yea mate turbo glide do a high mount, but make sure your get a heat sheild with the high mount. My mate uses the highmount setup. He melted wires because he didnt use one. Expensive lesson learned. Try to find a better manifold than turbo glide, if u compare turbo glide to MTQ low mounts, you can see a real quality difference. IMHO turbo glide dont offer value for your money. Personally i didnt like the look of it and went for the low mount.Hey figjam I really like what you did mate!

GT28 discos are a good choice, do not buy it from turbo glide though, i can guarantee you they rip you off, get it from GCG in Condell Park. Again they are pricey but.. I found them to be more helpful than what turbo glide were. They are actually willing to help you out show you the mapping etc and show you what works best. I spoke to them alot and MTQ before i finally got it all together. 6 months of planning and it worked exactly how i wanted it too.
Its been said before and ill say it too, it all depends on what you really want it too do, i was going for a constant boost over all gears, some people like all top end, others like bottom, i sit somewhere in the middle. BTW, Grahame Cooper Automotive are tuning it for me on the Dyno soon, ive seen this bloke punch GQs up to around 18 to 22 psi im staying at around 10.
Know a few people running these ones on the TD42, They have never had a problem with them. I looked at them, the hot side housing looks exactly the same as mine and mine was a Garrett. Im very tempted to see when its time for a rebuild on these if it can be rebuilt with a garrett kit, from what ive seen inside these so far is that it can be done. Im not saying its definite yet, but im going to try, you can only try. Im also tempted to see if i can get a compressor housing from a garrett to fit it. My guess is it wont, but im willing to try. Im all up for experimenting.IMO i wouldnt touch a kkr turbo if you payed me. cheap chineese crap that wil spool later, and shat itself quicker.
Hey figjam, have you got any RPM/boost info for us on your system?? I'm interested to know when it starts to spool, when it hits full boost, and when it starts to taper off.
The turbo i have has a ceramic turbine wheel, so i'll be limited to 14psi, but on the plus side it does have water and oil cooling which is a plus for longevity for me.

I'll be using heat wrap, and either a heat sheild or beanie for the hot side of my turbo.
I've got all of my crap together, but as my datto is currently off the road the patrol is my daily driver. I'll probly take a week off when the time comes and get it all knocked over in one hit. I want to get my car dynoed before i put the turbo on too.

at 1100 revs i hit between 2 to 3
at 1600 im getting 7 to 9
and anything above that im producing a full ten then when i get around 3200 its gone. I very rarely get up to 3 200 though, since i put the thing on i can cruise just about anywhere in 4th or 5th and still be producing anywhere between 5 to 10 pounds.
EG: I went for a drive when i got this post, 70kms an hour 5th gear at 1400 revs i was getting a solid 6, i backed off the pedal and got about 4.
if i had been doing 70 in 4th, i would of been doing 8 to 10. It depends on what gear im in really.
so now after that rambling explanation ill give u my typical driving patter i stick too.

2nd: rev to around 1900 = 9 psi
3rd: rev to almost 2 200 = full ten
