What is this noise!!!!!!
Gday all,
Ive got an 04 TD Lux with 75,000 clicks on it and so far its been an awesome car.
For the past 12 months or so it has developed this strange 'fast ticking' sound that is coming from underneath and can be heard inside the cabin when driving - its only a faint sound but very annoying as now i always listen for it.... its a really fast 'tick, tick, tick, tick' noise.....
Here's the catch - whenever i put my foot on the clutch to change gears the noise stops - i then change gear and accelerate and it starts up again.
A mate mentioned it could be the 'thrust bearing' in the clutch??
If anyone has any ideas re this i'd love to hear them.
Cheers guys.

The thrust bearing shouldn't be turning when you're off the clutch pedal - it only turns when the pedal is pressed. Similarly with the spigot - inner and outer races are turning together when the pedal is out.
Does it happen stationary, at idle / in neutral? Or only when the car is moving?
Does it change with road speed or engine speed?
Depress the clutch fully, or just put a little bit of pressure on it?

Yep mate it can be heard both when i'm driving and also stationary at idle - as soon as i touch the clutch and depress it even a little bit it stops - then as soon as i release the clutch it will start up again.
If i accelerate to a faster speed the ticking noise will speed up... then as i slow it slows...
It's giving me the shites...
My mate suggested id be up for a big bill if it was the thrust bearing as its a pain to get to in the Lux - is this true and how hard would it be to get checked out to see if it was that?
Cheers guys - appreciate your advice.

Could be this just a loose sheild or housing.turps wrote:There is a bash plate/heat shield around the exhaust
A mates hilux had a similar problem last year. It didnt make any noise when there was no load. But with a slight load the drive shaft would hit it.
A guy at my work was saying the same thing but on a ford sedan.
Went off to 3-4 mechanics they always said it was the trust bearing but when they check for a quote, it it's always fine.
He ended up working out was a loose bolt holding the housing on, tightened that all fixed.
some mechanics were quoting $1000's of doolars to fix this problem.
my brothers prado did the same thing ended up being the ahrdfacing came off one of the gears and they only found it when a bearing started making a noise
dissassembled by toyota under warranty and they rplaced the whole gear set tfied to sting him 950 for a clutch though

or is it more middle to back ened noise?
so if you foot off the clutch and out of gear dose the noise come back?
or is it just when you put ya fut on to changes gears

Yep it definately sounds like its in the front end - as soon as i press the clutch in even a tiny bit the noise will go away - i then release the clutch and it comes back.
I'll test a few different things and get back to ya but ive got a feeling if the clutch is in then i rev the motor the noise wont occur - it will only happen when the clutch is released.
