unknown klunk ?what do you think this is??

Post by flexit »

hi there. last time out to the Wattos i got a clunking sound in the front diff when it was under load or going up hill. 1st i thought its my auto hubs so riped them of but could not find a fault with them no cracks no metal shavings or any thing suspicious . so i ripped out the cv's and axles there is no cracks or bits of bearing or anything that looks broken but i did not get the CV off the axle as i'm not sure on getting them off no circlips and i didn't want to whack it to hard with the hammer are they pressed on or what is the go there? i haven't pulled the diff center out yet but has anyone got any ideas what this clunking sound might bee it sounded like something jumping a tooth when under load it sounded like it was coming from the passengers side? and the auto hubs still made no difference if it was in auto or Manuel lock it still did the clunk clunk each time the wheel went around . i don't know if the cv is broken inside where i cant see it ?? its got me beat so far. ill appreciate any thoughts. thanks

hi man

some bloke had the same syptoms on here a while back, after all the regular solutions, someone commented on the transfercase chain being loose.
sounds like yours might be the same problem.

transfercases are cheap enough to change completely rather than pulling it apart and changing the chain.

before i changed to manual hubs, my autos would clunk. there was no visible damage to the hub itself inside or out, that i could see.

i would try changing to manuals before going crazy, pulling transfer cases or stuff like that.
a manual locking hub from a wrecker should be approx. $75-100
they are stronger than autos and you know for a fact that they are either locked or not.

i suspect if there was damage to a cv, it will eventually make steering difficult. as the broken pieces of cv bind between the knuckle and housing.

if there were damage to a ring and pinion i suspect you would be having more dramas than just a clunk.

btw the axle shaft has a snap ring on the end of it. it prevents the cv coming off. a big hit with a brass hammer will either have the cv and shaft separated or could break the cv.
