Is there a reason why CAMS specifies cages must be internal?

Is it because the body panels can collapse onto the internal cage and not hit the occupants? Isn't there now a danger of the occupants hitting the barwork, although CAMS quotes 150mm (I think) between the bar and occupants head?

If so, then why do most comp trucks have external cages, or is it to save the bodywork and assist in sliding on rocks. They wouldn't have both internal and extranal cages would they?

Bru21 on here built a comp truck with both internal and external cages for that reason. Not sure about others. I think many comps in OZ are run under the CCDA which do not require cams-spec cages???

External cages are to protect the body. A tree stump or pointy rock could fit between the external cage bars and still the squash the roof in on the driver.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

It would also be the way they both attach to the rest of the car. EXO would have a crap load more bends in them. So would need more bracing.
Where as an internal cage would be easier to tie it all together for a large number of forces. And the forces would be easier to tie into the main strength of the car.

Also like has been mentioned. EXO's by them selfs still have a chance of the Cab being crushed down onto the occupants.

An aproved internal cage is all good if you have a pootrol or cruiser but how the hell do you get one to fit in a Hilux and still have room for your head?
My noggin hits the roof as it is when I have a helmet on.
Maybe I will have to do a floor lowering :roll:
I am goin to go with an exo but there is talk of comps starting in WA that will need CCDA aproved cages.

Just had a look at the CCDA specs and they say internal cages for wagons and it seems a combo (internal cage in the cabin and external for the tray) for utes.
Im here for the sausage!
