hi-steer 4 GQ ???

Post by hypo »

i have read the thread about wendles mq knuckle swap, very informative.

i plan on running the GQ axles in my backyard under my toy and my only concern now is the steering...

does any1 have or make a arm that replaces the top trunion bearin pin with a steerin arm similar 2 that of the histeer setups on a lux ?? or flipped arm like a cruza ??

Hi,
I'm new to the site and was curious if you could tell me where i could get your GQ High Steering setup.

Also, did you have to adjust the height of the Panhard Arm to suit the angle of the High Steer??

A1 mav, It steers and drives like standard, I'm very happy with it.

Loz, both the panhard bars have been ajusted to suit.

I'll ask about the cost and send a PM.

Cheers.

Maybe you want to do the MQ knuckle swap first before you get a high steer arm made. It will get the steering up high in front rather than low behind and will work out cheaper in the long run.

was thinking that but i kinda sik of having all the bolt on bits and swpped shit like on mine ATM so i was think that coz its a custom arm anyway mayb another arm can b made 4 the other side so i can run it similar 2 a hilux setup with the tierod above the leaves

my only other concern is that by doing the MQ swap i think the tie rod will end up interferin with the springs coz looking at the comparison between wendles setup and looking at where the tierod is height wise it sit just higher than the original brackets 4 the radius arms which is where i plan on mounting the leaves so without makin the perches higher it will cause hassles

hypo, put the MQ knuckles on. that will give you a steering arm at the front of BOTH knuckles to brace a cheezy-style trunion cap arm to. you can then have your tie-rod and drag-link axactly as they are now. you can also just swap the GQ knuckles left to right to have the same effect, but it puts the calipers out in front...

I have done the same thing with my panhard to suit the MQ knuckles with the reverse taper (flatter draglink)
very worthwhile little job.
I made mine twin shear, and tied it back into the original mount..
Turned up a bush for itout of an UHDPE bodylift block! :D

if you can fit MQ knuckles to a GQ housing

then you could fit the chaos hy steer arms like a hilux

http://www.offroadindustries.com/Products/steering.htm

do the MQ and GQ use the same top kinpin bearing retainer cap?

pete christie runs them like that no worries, but if you have big offset rims or spacers, they get a bit exposed.

the chaos arms might be the go, but I would be a bit dicey about bolting anything to the bearing cap without a brace to the original arm. There isn't much meat around the bolt holes like a toyota knuckle. The toyota product is designed to have the arms bolted there, the nissan product isn't..

I reckon either swap the knuckles left to right, or use MQ knuckles, then make cheezy style arms to get all your shiat above the leaves...

eside the calipers being more exposed(i plan on making a cover 2 protect these) will swappin the knuckles from left 2 right have any other effects ?? eg: ackernan(sp?)

cos from wot i can work out it will be easier and more cost effective 2 just swap the knuckle from left 2 right and get 2 custom arms like tsl's(coz they look way stronger than cheezys) made so that everything is above the springs

If you are making steering arms up, it is those arms that will decide your ackerman angle. So you can set it where you want, within reason. It is nearly impossible to get true ackerman with the tie-rod out the front, as the ball joints would be inside the tyres somewhere

very, very , very, vaguely and briefly; you want a line drawn from the centre of the tie rod end through the centre of the steering axis, when extended rearwards, to meet the rear axle in the centre. I really think that close enough is good enough in this case. Even the manafacturers will use the same steering arms on vehicles with different track widths and wheelbases, so most of our trucks are way off to begin with...

just had another thought. If you make arms to bolt to the bearing cap, put a return on the inside edge of them to pick up the top couple of bolts that hold the wipe seal plate on. This should take heaps of shear load of the bearing cap bolts???

That is how V8Patrol has setup his arm on his MQ.
