Just wondering if anyone runs or knows of any diesels like the cruiser 4.2 with a thermo fan. I was thinking of getting rid of the clutch fan and using a thermo.
I know that the clutch fans of cruisers are one of the best around but I was just curious. Might free up a couple of pony's also.

I just bought a pair of AU XR8 fans that will fit in nicely on my 1HZ.
They cost me $165 for the fans and 30 for the switches etc...
Havn't had the free time chuck them in - but will work awesomely... I have body lift and its too much work to lower the rad down.
A few blokes run this setup on winch challenge vehicles. The XR ones can be washed out after mud runs etc as well as being able to replace the motors if they flog out! Chase em up and enjoy the extra ponies!

I was going to use a 16 inch thermo from an auto shop and just make up a mount for it.
Have heard that one big fan is better than 2 smaller ones cause it covers more area.
Do you reckon you would notice the difference in power with a non turbo diesel??? I know guys who gained quite a bit on street cars when they did this conversion.

I reckon you'd gain about 5-6HP or more at higher rev's.
These fans are kick ass as they are a staggered setup - you can also stage the switch with an overide - so at one temp - the RHS fan goes on as thats the feed side for the coolant flow - then as the temp got more - the second would come on - only has to be be a 5 deg difference. There's an electric switch that davies craig have now that offers that control - 2 stage.
The fans can also be setup with override so on a long hill or full noise you can have both on with no cutout once cooled - so you can charge hard.
Easily done and cheaper than a single 16 or 18" one. too easy mate.
Also easy as teh Ford ones have a shroud built to just bolt on - heaps easier!!!

I scored mine from a General wrecker - Ferntree Gully Auto Salvage.

I did it to an old 221 in an XW - made a big difference in traffic.
Seeing as diesels get hot when you work them - this works ace!
You can get quoted upto $300 for them - give FTG salvage a ring and get it shipped!

how do u figure i paid 155 4 my 16" davis craig thermo fan and i just used the 4 bolts in the package and its on and has no probs i wired the thermo switch up so i can have it on at all times, off(4 water and mud), and on to cycle with the temperature

Depending on the shape of the radiator you may cover it better with 2 fans, the other advantage is if one gets a stick jammed in it and melts down you can probably keep going for the weekend on the other. I had each on a seperate thermo switch with one set about 5 degrees hotter and a light on the dash linked to it's switch to warn me when it was working hard.
Note that wiring the light to the motor will result in the light illuminating as the wind driven fan turns into a generator on the freeway

I paid very similare for my DCSL16.
The fan can be bought for around $110 and the thermo switch is around $40. $330 is RRP but if you are involved in the Airconditioning Industry and buy lots of this type of thing you get discounts.

There's not much point quoting cheap prices like that then... is there?!? Unless of course you want to help us all out with getting them for that price!
For the thermal switch to activate the fan don't bother with the high $ Davies Craig one- go to your nearest auto parts place and they should be able to supply you with a small screw in thermal switch. VDO and a few other companies make them in varying temp switch points.
Or go to a wrecker who deals with FWD cars and buy one second hand. I got mine from a Daihatsu Applause, but mainly because they run the same engine as my Feroza in FWD config.
