GU 2.8td vs 4.2td towrig and DD

Post by DIRTY ROCK STAR »

guys,

abit off topic but..

whats the stock figures of a 2.8TD VS a 4.2TD in GU's.

yeah i did search too ;)

looking at getting a GU to tow my comp rig. so wondering what the stock performance figures are vs economy.

and if the smaller 2.8 is up for towing 2500kg?

cheers

Serious?????

IMHO, depending on how long you want to keep the car, i'd go for the TD42 for longevity. I dont think there's any "issues" with the 2.8 like there was with the ZD30, but the TD42's are great for towing even in N/A form.

i love my 2.8 its great to dive good on fuel and goes places, but if you are after a tow vehicle dont even bother about the 2.8, go the 4.2 definately, the 2.8s just dont have much power to tow anything especially not a comp truck and car trailer. they would do it but not hapily.

99% sure the 2.8's had a "lesser" drivetrain too....

GU rd28 still had the small gearbox, the ZD30 has the big TD/TB gearbox.

I have the 4.2tdi and it works hard on big trips towing the buggy let alone a full body rig, if you go the 2.8 get a big overdraft and thats just to get to perform as good as the 4.2 let alone repair it after is sh*ts it's self. The petrol 4.2 are not so bad if run them on gas.

2.8's also have the smaller gearbox similar to the 300ZX from what i believe, they have a shit duel mass flywheel which make loaded takeoffs on steep hills shit, and duel mass flywheels are about 2k new, thou you can fit a stamdard flywheel and clutch set up.
RD28 has smaller tail shafts, smaller unis, injector pump problems are common as well, with repair values up to 3k,

they are only good for towing 2500kgs where as a td42 is good for 3500kg's,

TD42's are real hard to find in top nick,

Andrew who owns it is on this board to.. GQAndrew.

Getsomeone to check it over basically, then cheap airfare to Perth yourself if your happy with photos, and inspection etc.

Take a week off work, fly over drive home..

I think if you bought it and it was a dog (I dont think it is lookin at it), you could still make bux on it easily, $15k is cheap - and hes keen to sell, so $12-13k?. People are dreaming of that price on GQ's still...

The numbers may not be super high, but i think you'll be surprised. My car is definately not the fastest out of my crew of mates, but it doesn't matter if i'm running around empty, towing the stock trailer, or towing a car trailer - at least its consistently slow.

It sits on 110km/h all the way to work without dramas, doesn't slow up on hills, and is very consistent with fuel usage when driven "properly".

All i can say is thank christ its not as slow as a hilux.

Yes...... I think the N/A has around 45ish rwkw on a good day, so 91fwkw is probably a tad optimistic.....
