Crane Cam Fireball XR700

Post by MyGQ »

Hi guys

Well i am installing a gas system to a mates Patrol and we are going to do away with the old points system

Now before i get flamed and told to use Petronix system, i have used them and don't like them one bit, so that's out of the question

I am looking for a place that sells the XR700 Fireball kit from Crane Cams

I have a kit here but its missing the mounting brackets and all attempts to make my own fail, so i am going to buy a new one (this one cost me nothing) So if someone can point me in the right direction that would be good, anywhere in Aus will do if they ship, just gotta have one of these babies

What is wrong with Petronix that makes you not like them?

I have a crane it was the biggest that u could get from crane themselves so whatever that ones is, i would never go that way again. I havent had any trouble but putting it in was a load of bullshit from the having to machine down the dizzy shaft (cam) to hooking up the wiring and the tacho not being accurate even with the resistor they recommended. Even when you do get it all in the way the shutter wheel for the optic pick up sits seems very unreliable wouldnt take much to move it. But like i said no probs so far just wish i saw the petronix b4 hand.

Another thing is when you said there unreliable (petronix), even if they shit themselves you can leave the points etc all there setup so if u do get in the shit its a good backup to get u home. I just cant believe anyone would muck around with it after seeing/knowing how easy petronics are to install, id go that way and buy a spare if your that worried.

you can also go back to points with the Crane Cam, the one i put in my mav was a XR700 and it didn't need any machining of the shaft, so if i needed to go back to points it was a simple process.

Get the 3000 so you can run a HEI coil (the low primary resistance/high current draw of these fries the Petronix units).
Or run a peronix with an ICE 7 amp module which is a bit dearer but more output.

i've used heaps of the crane XR700 and XR3000. never once had to modify anything to get them to fit.

I've even used an XR700 in a 3 cylinder dizzy, used a modified 6cyl shutter disc.

A customer asked us to fit an new dizzy with a pertronics to his MG.
Fitting was no faster or easier then fitting a crane XR.
Turn the key and no spark. So that was a step backwards from points.

after some more reading and checking, we found the the pertronics doesn't like power supply to drop below 9V. MGs being MGs, this was bad thing to have, with old wiring and a piss weak charging system cranking volts very easily drop below 9V.

So to fix it we could do a generator to alternator swap, (try convincing and MG owner to do that, good luck) and run new wiring from the battery up to the starter solenoid (cable operated starter solenoid)
fit a new solenoid and hope like hell it fixed it.

OR we could fit an XR700. The XR700 in that car is going fine and owner tell us the car has never run better. (i'd hope so after loosing the points and me spending about 5 hours on the SU carbies.

Try Speedpro Vic on 97945177.
They sell complete units and parts but have now idea of how to fit them!!
Any idea of how to fit them to a TB42??
Im thinking that I may have to cut a piece out of the dusk cover to suit??
