dad is putting the 3.9 in his county at the moment and has two turbos sitting at home, off the sd33 engine. would this make it use a shitload more fuel or help it ? and how much power would be gained around about ?
Plenty of Rover V8s have been turboed with good results, dunno if the SD33 ones will be suitable though. I am not a turbo sort of person but I would have thought they'd be too big.

SD33 turbos are T3, comparable in size to what you'd fit to a 1.8-2 litre petrol. So two of them would work.
Being diesel turbos, they often have smaller exhaust housings so they'll spool up sooner but not have the high end kick. Being T3 based it's not a problem to swap a different exhaust housing onto them.

It made 156 kw at the wheels.Max power was made at 4500rpm with no need to rev it more then that.I run a gas research throttle body which i would reccommend.It also made a huge amount of torque down low which i was really pleased with considering its a large turbo (T04).Fuel consumption was pretty good.I had a 100 litre gas tank with about 85 useable and i could get over 400km easy .In a disco it would be a bit less.I did have a dyno chart from when i did it but i lost it after about 5 min from leaving the place where i did it.Had the windows open and booted it and it flew out the window. The only thing holding me back for more easy power is my setup.Its an old school draw through system.If you were to run injection and an intercooler you have the possibility to get so much more power out of it.You sure will have fun with it!

Hey Sprover, what size gas research throttle body and converter are you running? Can you post a pic of where you mounted the turbo and also are you running an intercooler? I am currently trying do the same thing, wanna run duel fuel setup (megasquirt v3/gas research throttle body), best of both world! I currently have bought the megasquirt v3 setup and a Holset HX35w turbo which is perfect for 3.9.
With the t04 turbo, when does boost start coming in and how much psi are you running?

The motor is bog standard except for the turbo of course.But the main thing which made a big difference for me was a Scorcher distributor and some ICE leads.I would definately be using this ignition set up if you go supercharged.Also i had a water methanol spray set up for when on boost.You shouldnt have any problems running 6 pounds boost.But with my motor being high comp i cant run anymore then 9 pounds without an intercooler.Good luck with it all.When its up and running it will be fun to drive.
Will your motor be low comp? If so you should be able to crank some more boost into it.

I will have a look for you tomorrow.Im not running any intercooler and a pretty old school set up.A megasquirt set up is the way to go.Where abouts in Melbourne are you? If your close to Glen Waverley you can come and check it out.Let me know.

Hey chris, Im located in Thomastown, Im going to be building a low comp engine maximum 8.5:1, The motor in my rangie is on its last legs it think! Its losing water but can see it dripping anywhere, so I dont now if I have a head gasket problem or a cracked block/slipped liner! It idles like shit on petrol but drives really well and doesnt overheat, when you switch it to gas its perfect, so I dont know whats going on. Another problem is It also goes through a lot of oil, but doesnt smoke at all! Figure that one out for me!!! It must be the special self lubricating system that landrover installs on all there vehicles (oil Leaks)... But on a good note I picked up a second hand long block on evilbay this week for $300 thats supose to have about 200000klm on it, that will make for a perfect turbo rebuild unit! Hey Chris what side did you mount the turbo on drivers or passengers? Was it mounted high or low? Just wondering because mines a rangie softdash so my engine bay is pretty full!

Thanks for that information. My supercharged engine was initially a low comp. I then set out to have the comp increased but as per all engine builds, things change. In the end I switched to composite gaskets and this in effect lowers the compression ratio slightly. So my motor will be approx 7.8:1, the reason for this was to hopefully extend the life of the standard crank, rods and pistons. I also have a meth injection setup to go on but was not going to utilise this until i stepped up the boost to 9lb.
I have soo may more questions to ask, but dont want to fill this thread with carp! I guess I will learn more as I go and hopefully I have the vehicle on the road soon. Been way past schedule for a good wheel
