my dad is thinking bout buying a new bmw 4x4 to go touring around australia wat do ppl think of the idea like to put money into raising it and making it worthwhile to be an offroad machine

basically it will be all custom $$$$$$$$ stuff to make it worthwhile offroad to do outback or anything harder than a run to Hotham in the snow. Spend his money on a Landcruiser of Patrol if he really wants to get the most of the trip. He'll be able to cruise comfortably plus have the reassurance that the car can take it and can be fixed and modded easily.

Yeah, in case it's a serious question you'd have to suggest turbo diesel landcruiser or patrol for reasons of (a) inherent reliability (b) inherent performance and (c) availability of parts and repair expertise in remote areas.
All the things that make beemers nice cars are irrelevant to the "around Australia" purpose. A cruiser or patrol is going to be at least as comfortable as the beemer on a long trip and a brand new one should satisfy most people's need to pose. They aren't short of grunt either.
Only other thought... maybe a disco or a big defender...?

I don't think it is such a stupid question. if you are a newbie to wheeling the impression that alot of these softroaders like the BMW gives through advertising is that they would be capable of such a trip. Hell if you believe the Ford Escape ad you'd buy one in a sec. Advertising companies need to take a bit more responsibilty in the way they are portraying alot of products as they can give some dangerous info to people.
I have pulled a CRV out of a boghole way up in the high country. They were by themselves in a completley stock vehicle with no recovery gear etc, hopelessly stuck. They couldn't believe they were stuck because they were in a 4wd and 4wds can go anywhere. The damage they had done to their car getting as far as they had and then the damage getting them out certainly opened their eyes and emptied their wallets
