zd30 will not start

Post by simkell »

I have a gu with a zd30 that just stopped and will not start.
I was driving down the road nothing out the ordinary, when all the a sudden the engine just stopped. No funny noises or anything, just stopped.

I checked all battery connections, fuses relays and links and all appear fine. Checked for fault codes and got-
0706, 0705, 0707, 0905, 1003, 0301, 0403, 0208, and 0703.

I then reset the the fault codes as per workshop manual and the only code that came up was 0505, which means no faults found.

does anyone have any idea as to what the problem maybe.

There are no fuel blockages, the turbo was replaced about 10k ago, and no air restrictions. any idea anyone? got me stumped.

edit - sorry year model is a 2001.

injector pump. computer on the top of it.

needs the fuel for cooling.

fuel leak letting air into the system = tiny little hot spot.

fried better than the spring rolls at your local chinese takeway.

of course this is purely speculation.

if it was a ecu problem on top of the injector pump, would it not come up with a fault code as identifying a problem with the ecu. I believe the fault codes which were the before resetting were from previous problems. the car has been a mule, 2 clutches, a turbo, and other problems all within a space of of 10k.

mate take your oil filler cap off and see if u can see the timing chain ( i think from memory you can just see it) get some one to crank the engin and see if the cam chain moves if not u have broken the chain :bad-words: ... I have seen this on many a GU, i have also hurd of a problem with them melting pistons, but if u said it did't make any noises when it stoped then this should be the problem....

Q. does it sound like its cranking over faster then normal???

go look on Exploroz, still going at 06 with windows in the pistons, one of them did well ALL 4 pistons!

would not think it was pistons as it did not fart or miss fire before it stopped, also does not seem it has low compression whilst cranking.

does the oil pressure switch if faulty cause the engine to stop and not restart?

Dave we had a similar problem to the one you described with our GU Wagon. It ran fine then when the Mrs tried to start it no go . Cranked over fine but woudn't fire. Pulled fuel pump and sent it for rebuild. Re fitted but still no good. Spent 2 days fault finding with no luck. Last resort before sending to dealer started checking voltages on the ECU circuit and found a bad ECU relay in the main relay box. Voltage across the closed relay was under 10v. Replace with the driving light relay and if fired up 1st try. Also ECU won't trigger if main voltage is under 11v. If you need any more info or the relay number or position E-Mail me as I have some stuff written down in workshop

^ A PM from a guy on Patrol4x4.com to me.

Look into it, old mate joined up to PM me, If you need anymore info I will email him and see if he is willing to help.

This was for my mates car and I never got a chance to check it out as my mate took the car to a Nissan dealer and got screwed in the order of $5500 for a new engine which it didn't need.

I never did find out what the reason was with his ZD30 as the dealer wouldn't tell.

thanks will check for low voltage and the relay as mentioned. Just hope it is not a cooked ecu. Is there a way of checking the ecu if it is still working?

Swap it with a mates ECU, if it fires up you know the problem.

Will it start or try to with some aerostart? This at least tells you it lack of fuel or something else.

How are you getting codes out? Do you have an oscilloscope to see if the can system is sending signals back and forth?? Wiring between pump and ecu ok? No shorts to earth or broken wires?

Have you tried cracking an injector line to see if any fuel is being pumped at all.

You can get to the front one without too much trouble if you drop the plastic cover off i think.

What were the codes that you found.

it appears to be a no fuel problem. fuel to pump but no fuel out. cracked lines and nothing coming out. it is as if the pump is in the no fuel position. which i thought could be a fuel cutout solenoid or the ecu telling the pump to go to no fuel. so timing isn't out, otherwise it would still pump. no holes in pistons (i think, haven't compression tested) as i would doubt it would do all four in 1 hit. it would still start and run on 3 cylinders.

If it aint pumping fuel it aint gonna go, suggest to take it to your nearest fuel shop mate.
