Ahh - I get how it works now. The toyota filter basically works by apportioning the flow between the filters. E.g. 80% of the flow might go through the FF part of the element, and 20% through the Bypass section. Though this would likely change as the filter loads.
Yes ben thats about it. can't answer the proportions. It is the way it should work :)
ben off this topic heard from weststates diesel systems http://westatesystems.com/ about centrifical filters. They have done conversions and I am following up at present ( on 1 vehicle they claim 23000k and oil test is still good. thanks les
Oil Centrifuges work well. MANN+HUMMEL also make one.

After speaking with Ryco I got this letter in the mail.

Seems they have been made overseas for many years, and claim to be equivalent to genuine.

Thank you for your enquiry.

To remain competitive in the Automotive
Aftermarket local manufacturing in Australia was ceased several years
ago.

Since then we have sourced a number of manufacturing partners from
around the world who manufacture our filters to our Ryco specifications.

Regardless of the country of manufacture, all Ryco filters are produced
to meet our design philosophy: to match the perfomance of genuine
product.

Our genuine quality philisophy is based around a good
performing filter being able to excel in three critical areas
efficiency, life and flow.

We continue to utilise our expertise in
filtration to develop new products and conducting regular testing
utilising Australia's only dedicated Filtration laboratory at our head
office.

Umm - they claim to MATCH the performance of genuine filters, not be "better".

At least that is more realistic than the companies claiming better filtration AND better flow than genuine.

And they could get into trouble claiming they have the ONLY dedicated filtration lab. Maybe the only dedicated AUTOMOTIVE filtration lab.
