engine conversion - gq
engine conversion - gq
took my gq td42 into the mechanic today and got the dreaded news that 3 cyliners dont even have half the compression they should. Problem is this is the second motor thats s''t itself, 1st was my fualt from running too much boost, this 1 well i probably deserved for buying u used td42 for $1500 bottom end only, but i got 12months out of it so nothing to get upset about.
Im looking for people opinion on whats the easiest an most cost effective solution here, weather i stick to a turbo'd td42 or diesels for that matter considering the cost of another motor. Or do i convert to a v8?? injected or carby???

If you already have turbo etc then the cost of a good TD42 rebuild is going to be similar to a conversion.
So what do you want?
I went with a V8 conversion because it was for comps but if it was a normal tourer / weekend warrior or a DD then I'd have just worked the TD42 a bit more.

CHEV IT.
a worked diesel is all good when its running well, and it good nick, but when it packs it in your bank balance depleats quicker then ( cant think of something to compare it to) anything...
if you chev it, its only ever a 500$ rebuild.

That's not called a rebuild thats commonly referred to as a reco where you replace just enough to make it work again, a rebuild is not a $500.00 option.jessie928 wrote:CHEV IT.

are you speaking English? Half your post makes no sense to me, and like i said its not a rebuild for $500. In your list no pistons, no rod resizing, no block decking, let alone common bore and hone, then there's tunnel alignment...seriously does anyone here think and engine rebuild is a rebuild if you only change rings and bearings?? anyone??
also your prices are below cost, I cant get a TB42 VRS kit for $70.00 let alone full gasket set, can you share with us who supplies them for this i'll move my account to them, bearings $30?? for what pick a part second hand ones, come on your posts are really getting more amusing daily.

Try about 15psi, intercooled, 3" exhaust and with a good tune. That isn't a lot of money to do and will be very reliable and will last along time. Sure if you want to go with a fully worked TD42 with a ported head, balanced, hybrid fuel pump etc etc then you will be spending a fortune but if you aren't racinf or in the trade why would you spend the money? Mind you it would give you about 200rwkw and about 1,000,000 nm but the realtiy is that for that you are better of with a V8 anyway.jessie928 wrote:CHEV IT.

BUT that is not what is being discussed here!
In answer to the original question, what I said originally is valid and at $6k for a crate TD42 why would you piss around with anything else (in this case). Maybe a TD42T crate motor but that is it!

AN INJECOR PUMP REBUILD ON ITS OWN STARTS FROM OVER 1500$.
you said " I cant get a TB42 VRS kit for $70.00 let alone full gasket set,"
we are talking about the chev conversion, WORLDS most modified engine= cheap parts, not a friggen forklift engine conversion.
linebore and new bearings cost 80
a BRAND NEW SET OF PISTONS 200$
do you get the picture?
you have serious issues.

mate, the injector pump is the heart of the diesel engine, and the single most important part ( most expensive) its obviously part of a rebuild, or refeshen or whatever, then you have the injectors.......NutterGQ wrote:when did I ever mention an injector pump, read first then speak, stop trying to be the last to get a word in.
seriously though, do you have an inferiority complex?

Don't know but he has 2 pumps and 12 injectors so getting some reco'ed isn't that big a deal and will only cost $2kish. That would make it $8k for a new motor etc which is still a pretty good option IMO.
That being said I sold my turbo IC etc and got really good money for it. So there are other ways of reducing costs.

never buy the first of any model to come out, wait for service pack 4 at least and some of the bugs are ironed out.sld86 wrote:im just gunna wait till the new patrols come out eventually and i will get one of them

how do you work that out aye? How on earth at a guess would you think I could have come to the conclusion I did? Hint: out of the 20,400 users how many say Aye?
why dont you just pull the engine down, replace the rings and bearings and put it back together again?sld86 wrote:righteo ive had a bit of a hunt around the countryside and ive found a rebuilt exchange for about $3500. problem is im going to sell the bloody thing this is the second motor 2 shit the bed (this 1 bought from jessie928) by the way 12months ago!!! and only done 5000ks on it....

No offense Jes, but most people would be paying $500 just in labour to screw the chev back together with all the parts (shop based, not back yard)
I'm still with you though, Chev it as they have the power and are cheap....but in saying that, the conversion done properly is still going to cost as much as those crate motors.....if your happy to have another.
By the way Jes, I have a 350 sitting here also.....needs a freshen, can you do that for $500 for me? Might mean I get my project on the road sooner as shops are charging minimum $2k

Fark me has everyone forgotten to take their nice pills. We've got people getting all personal over advice given (whether it be right or wrong advice, it is just bloody advice), we've got others accusing people of discrimination just because they asked a question of their nationality.
Settle down everyone, be tolerant of each other, keep your personal attacks out of the threads and focus on the issues and we'll all have a much nicer time in the sand pit together.
Oh and smile please
