diff breathers for Ford Maverick SWB

Post by hottiemonster »

i tried to trace my diff breathers to see where they come out to know whether i should put an extension on em.

the front i traced to the engine bay on the same side as where a snorkel would go, behind the strut tower or whateva its called and going into the right hand side of the engine bay, the same as the air intake without a snorkel. Is it neccessary to extend it anymore? or have i just followed the wrong hose?

for the rear i have traced it to a bar the runs parallel from side to side of the car just infront of the gas tank. It joins to a round tube which is probably 1.5-2" thick. i dont know where it goes from there. Is there a better spot to extend this to?

Or are they good enough that they dont have to get extended?

is the positioning of the front diff breather fine?

casue it seems to be in the engine back right at the top near where "spare battery area" is for a GQ and the back right hand corner.

so just extend the rear then.

i think i can do that lol.

Probably not a bad idea anyway.

all depends on use, you would see the average road only going GQ see new diff oil once 3 years if that!

I have an MQ swb and its the same set up,the round tube that the rear breather goes to is open at either end so i took mine to engine bay along side the front breather tube.Abit safer if you play uboat occasionally.

Measure the size of the existing hose, get a cheap fuel filter that will fit into the hose, measure up how long you will need the hose to be and purchase it from the local hose supply shop or vehicle accessory outlet. Replace the hose, routing it under the vehicle ensuring it can't get caught on anything (secure with zip ties) and run the hose high in the engine bay, fit the fuel filer to the end of the hose (the fuel filter filters the air travelling through it) and secure the filter with more zip ties.

put the fuel filter near the diff end or the engine bay end?

Oops, sorry, at the engine bay end. The front breather will be fine, it won't need changing as it ties in to the breather from the gearbox and is well protected for normal offroading.

Breathers
Rear: Run new fuel line from diff along cross member under floor and follow loom in at right rear of vehicle. Push hose up behind flow thru vent and terminate in a cheap petrol filter.
Front: Pull out from where it enters guard or join a bit lower at Tee. Run to back of engine bay and into another petrol filter.

On gearbox (manual) breather hose runs down under exh and back up along chassis eventually joing at front Tee.
Remove pipe that routes breather hose under exh and run new hose from top of gearbox back to same tee.
(rubber hose under exh gets torn off or blocks with oil and gunk.)

can i join gearbox, front and rear diffs into the same filter, possibly using a connection piece.

It will make it easier.

Casue i am going to do it tomorrow.

already the front and gearbox join into 1, so can i get the rear diff hose and the other hose (front and gearbox) to connect to another T piece and then to the filter, or is this not wise.

remembering that if they are all together, that if one leaks water gets into all..

Seperate ones are not that much more hassle, it is a personal thing, I have seperate ones, took an extra 5 mins than it would to join them...

Bogged is right.

HM - its up to you if you want to run them all together in one little filter 'out of so called harm's way' ... Anything can happen, and its better having one leak.

Think about dominoes... its a bit similiar.. when one goes.. the rest go ;)

what you want to get is one of those clip things that you clip hose into, like a U shape thing that clips hose into, like the air cond hoses, screw one to the firewall, and have all 3 filters up there. Looks neat, and out of harms way...

If you have a look on the firewall there will be some white clips. You push things into them to hold things in place. Umm.. almost like a piece of pipe say 1cm round, with 'lips' on it, you push what ever you want into them, and it stays there.

They are the same ones that the silver steel/alloy air cond lines go from 1 side of the car to the other in.

Have a look at the attached pic, look at the red cable for the Piranha dual battery kit. that red hose clips into these things Im talkin about.

You dont need the JT's on to do a body lift, I didnt, many others havent. You dont really need them on for breathers either.

It takes 10-15 mins TOPS to change 5 rims over with trolley jack and wheel brace. I used to do it weekly with my MT's and AT's.

Your going to have to take them off sometime, Beadlocks will give it away to start with.

That red thing looks like a warped penis.

anyway if thats as high as you can go then thats it, but center of the firewall is better than the sides, its the last place the water can get to.. water can come in from the sides of the bonnet.

ANd dont rush things, if you cant get finished by Saturday, then so be it but do it once do it right, saves you coin.
