Hey guys, just throwing an idea out there of mine, im wanting to put a LS1/2 in the 2 door of mine.
As there is trans adaptors available for both GQ/GU and 80 series 5 Speeds what would be the choice box, strength/ratios?
As im already doing a diff swap, for 4 reasons
1. mine are stuffed, would have to have a full rebuild, ie diff gears, diff locks, axles and all the rest
2. Brakes, what more can i say
3. Wheels, endless options out there for the common 6 studs
4. Strength...
Obviously if i ran the Patrol box id run Patrol diffs, likewise the Toyo box with Toyo diffs, although as i mentioned in another post is that most people dont use a 80 front diff.
Which brings me to ask, diff widths. I have a set of LRA XL Flares fitted, will i have problems with either of these diffs fitting inside of the flares? unsure of the difference in widths between LR and Patrol/80.

Well my first opinon is if your running patrol/landcruiser gearbox, diff, transfer case then just buy the original car and modify it to be as good as the rangie. For the price of the parts you could probably pick up a whole car with a dud engine. My preference, and the avenue I'm looking down, is to run the 4l65e transmission, but have it rebuilt to suite use in a larger car, then adapt this to a lt-230.
If you want to go the way your going then I would have patrol running gear for comp use and cruiser gear for everyday / weekend use.

thanks stuee, i hear where your coming from but apart from just wanting to be different to everyone else out there this 2 door holds a bit of family history if you like.
Im sure it woud be a dam sight easier to buy a patrol and stick a LS1 in it but i have this expensive and work creating problem of being different to the pack
I have weighed up the options and thought about it very hard, and i guess the option is still there as i havent bought any of the parts yet.

Have a look around this site. They have a manualised 4l80 e and have adapted them to LR/RR. They reckon they have bolted 900hp up front with no probs.

Sorry forgot to mention if you didnt realize stuee ive done a bobtail job on this 2 door i speak of not to mention a heap of other work.

How do you with things like going down hill? do they get away from you?
Have always had prefrence to manuals cause i like to drive my cars not get driven by them.

I don't know which box is the strongest, I think it depends on whether you talk to a toyota or nissan fan.
If you use the jap diffs you will have to run nissan offset rims to keep the tyres within the flares. The diffs are about 100mm wider than the rover ones.
I have the gq front, 80 rear combo and toyota offset rims and I have 3" extensions on my flares.

Only problem with a 4l80e is sourcing one for a reasonable cost and the weight of them. A 4l65e can be built up tough no worries and there are heaps available.DL wrote:Hi Stuee,

Autos are fine off road and a lot easier on the beach. It just takes time getting used to them. See its fine if you take an engine and tranny from one car, tansfer case out of another and the diffs from another again. But using them all from the same car is wrong

Viscous - T700 (ritters)(if you can find one)
LT95 manual with chev adapter and taper roller
4L80E - LT230 (marks)
LT230 - T700 (overkill engineering?)
plenty of choices, and if you worried about it running away, go full manual and lower the stall a little.

hey corgie,
your rig looks like bit of a tuff unit, sadly though i cant go that wide of an offset if i want the engineers tick of approval on it, i can only go 25mm wider each side of the rangie width. which is no dramas but it may limit me a bit with rims which was one of the reasons i was changing anyway.
Ive got an 80 i can go measure tomorrow just to see what standard offset rims measure upto compared to the LR diffs
