FJ55 springs on rear of FJ40

Post by little rusty »

Hey guys

Got thr springs cleaned up and the mounting hardware sorted just need advice on removing old rivets holding the rear shackle hanger mounts to the chassis.

Once Ive got them removed I can shift the mount back an inch or two and get it done.

thanks in advance...

grinder + cold chisel + BFH to get it off. Once you get it off just flip it around and weld back on.

Found the easiest way when doing mine was to do a heap of small cuts with the cut-off wheel on the ginder, then cold chisel the head off. Then try and punch the rest of the rivet out (this only worked on 2 of mine). Then if that doesn't work, drill out the rivet with a slightly smaller drill bit then the rivet itself (cant remember what size sorry). Either way it is a shit of a job.

Oxy, blow em out.. If not, air chisel. Rather than shifting the hanger, flip it around..

I drilled the rivets, and yup, flip the mounts rather than moving them back.
cross member on right has standard mounts. One on left modified to suit 55 springs

so you guys had good experiences with 55 springs? thinking if it doesnt work out will get some custom length longer mains and go from there...

Haven't driven mine yet. Tis still in the build stage. but it seems to be a fair bit softer in the rear end, and extra wheel base has to be handy.

why would you get custom length extra mains made? that is what you have with the 55 springs. If the ride is not quite right adjust the spring pack to suite. You have lots of options as you can utilise the 55 pack and the 40 pack. I used 60 series main + second leaf and made the rest up from the 40 pack. the reason i used 60 instead of 55 is because my car has the larger spring eyelets.

I just grinded mine flush and a little deeper to get the plate off, then cut the hangers off the plate, and flogged them with a hammer, i got rid of that triangular plate and replaced the whole rear bumper while I was there, I flipped the mounts and had the springs protrude past the new rear bumper and put the hangers at the very back of that.

the easyest way to get the pins of is to dril the middle of them first and then smash them off with a cold chisel. The drilling removes most of teh rivet, so when yiou bash it with the chisel it just fly's of on the first strike.

i always drill - grind - punch chassis rivets. easiest way i've found.

55 rears work well... about the only part of the old setup i was happy with

It will be some time before I get to try the springs out but am expecting them to be fine after a reset. However if they are no good then custom would be the way to go as I currently run custom packs but stock length. They work a treat - 31 would max out articulation easily. Ride was good too. I also have an early model 40 so 60/75 series packs are no good and if I am moving the rear mount will probably get custom packs and resemble something like Twistys rear end (the 40!)

brad, run with what you've got.. you've got 55 springs (bonus!) and small eyelets on yer shackles bushes, just flip yer hanger and work it out later with extra leaves, you wont have a problem. best thing about 55 springs is flipping them to move the rear diff back. but baby steps!

i try and grind the head off, drill into it with a similarly sized bit then hit it with a punch and bfh.. repeat drilling until done.

oddly enough my 1984 bj42 didnt have rivits on the rear shackle hangers..

don't forget to put them back on straight too.. :P

errr 55 springs have a centred pin, so no matter which way ya flip em, you'll have the same WB.
