80 series dash lights came on

all the lights on my dash except the 'check engine' light popped on randomly and have since stayed. Had done a bit of wheeling, nothing serious though. NOthing seems wrong with the car, and suggestions?

it's a 4.5 petrol/lpg if that matters

Mine did the same after some water work. Filled the alternator with wd-40 a few times and especially the plug at the back of the alternator, fixed mine. Also make sure your wires from the alternator to the body are not too tight. Seen that cause it before too.
GO the 80...The mods have started :-)

Alternator.

Seen it a few times. Brushes get stuck and don't make contact. Sometimes you can dismantle the back of the alternator and loosen the brushes up and away it goes.

Alternator.

In my 100 (1HZ) it was cheaper to replace than rebuild. Chase your local Auto Leccy.

That said, my replacement failed after 9mths - replaced under warranty. Keep your receipt.

I'm 99% sure its the brushes. You need to take the alternator out. To get it out, unbolt the power steer reservoir to get more space to get it out.
Once out, remove the rear cover and unscrew the 3(I think) screws to get the brush housing off. Make sure the springs works properly and clean the brush surface where it touches the shaft. Put it back together nice and clean of course, and put it back in the car. Your dash lights should go back to normal immediately. If they don't the brushes aren't making proper contact or you forgot the plug on the back of the alternator.

Oh an one tip, that main positive wire on the side rear corner of the alternator, once you unbolt it, wrap it in elec tape to make sure you don't let it touch anything.

Ist, pull the plug at alt and clean it, if no dice, its brushes/reg...pretty common for earlier alts to be the plug,

my hilux does the same thing after driving thought a bit of water/mud. I would say what everyone else as said. also a bit of compressed air blow into the alternator will held get mud/dust out of there which will cause wear and bad contact.

My 80 did this and found the alternator putting out over 19V.

Now my deep cycle battery has died :cry:

also unclip the first clip on the harness where it attaches to the body, can be too tight and pull on the plug.

check that all contacts are good
